Default Dog Spray for loose dogs

I've got a leash-reactive 3 year old large dog and I've been noticing more and more off-leash dogs in my neighbourhood who either have approached or have the potential to approach us.

Owners don't seem to be too concerned, but my dog was attacked in December 2022 by an aggressive off-leash dog requiring an ER visit, so I'm a little uncertain of how she might react to other dogs approaching us now.

I am looking for something like bear spray, but for dogs, that I can legally discharge at a dog that approaches us in the neighbourhood. I'm looking for something with a good spray distance so that I can discharge it from a couple metres away and not risk spraying my own dog. Ideally I'm looking for something that does not seriously harm the other dog long term but causes it enough distress that it absolutely will not approach any further.

Does something like this exist, does anyone have any suggestions?

What you are asking about is literally called...'dog spray'. Though I suppose if you want to refine the search, 'anti-dog spray' or 'dog repellant spray' would work best.

It's available at pretty much the same places you'd find bear spray.

You’re only gonna get your dog too using any kind of spray and you’re then escalating situations dramatically. It doesn’t matter if a dog should be off leash or not you go around macing peoples dogs you’re inevitably gonna get your ass beat. Just start screaming “LEASH YOUR F’N DOG!!!” at people. It’ll be just as effective

https://www.sabrered.com/canadian-dog-spray

Quote:
Q: What is the main difference between SABRE’s dog coyote spray and the bear spray?

A: Size of the canister and range. Bear spray is 225 grams in Canada, which releases a seven-second spray similar to a fire extinguisher with a range of 9 to 10.5 metres. It’s a heavy fog with a 2.4-metre diameter. Dog spray is 22 grams, which releases in a 10-second thin stream. It has a range of three to 3.5 metres.

When a bear is coming at you, their head is moving up and down. With a firearm, accuracy can be a challenge. Bear spray is more effective at deterring a charging bear because it’s easier to hit them.

Dog spray is often used because you’re protecting your dog from an attacking dog or coyote. You don’t want to spray your own dog—only deter the aggressive dog.

I'd also recommending saving a bit for the dog owner that's not following the law.

Dogs should be on leashes unless at an off-leash park so I get the concern for your dog. However spraying oncoming dogs seems like a terrible idea bound to get you in a fight or arrested.

We need to petition the city for some safe spaces for dogs.

Yeah, too many lunatics out. I don't have anything against spraying an aggressive dog that is off leash and approaches you. People have a right to walk in public without having someone else's animal harassing you or invading your space. Spraying dogs, even if justified, sounds like something that could get you in a lot of trouble though.

One solution might just be to have bylaw on speed dial and the second there is an issue, just call them right away. Don't engage the owner, just call the local authority and hopefully they deal with it.

No Sliver references yet? I wouldn't be shocked if Sliver was making some kind of dog repellent in his garage to go with his lip balm.

To answer the OP, this seems far to risky to ever want to employ such a measure. You likely would end up on the Calgary subreddit listed as a an animal abuser or worse absolutely get your a** kicked in by some crazy dog owner.

They should have to follow the same rules as cats. Seems fair.

Under our Responsible Pet Ownership Bylaw, cat owners must ensure their cats:
  • Have a City of Calgary license.
  • Remain on the owner's property.
  • Do not disturb the peace by howling or crying.
  • Do not damage others' property.
  • Do not scatter garbage.
  • Do not chase, threaten, or attack a person or an animal.

Why do dogs get to go everywhere? Why do they have special parks set aside?

In fairness to the OP, I ####ing hate when people don't have their dogs on leash. That includes school fields and natural areas in communities.

Off leash areas are the only public space that dog's should be off leash

Pretty sure cats can be legally leashed and walked...

So you aren't legally allowed to have a cat even at a park if the cat is tethered? A lot of cat owners don't bother leash training them, but I have seen it and it seems relatively harmless. I totally get not allowing cats to roam though.

I don’t have much to add on the spray but I definitely thought this was a Sliver thread.

I don’t go to off leash dog parks after some bad experiences with improperly trained dogs and ####ty owners.

We leash trained our cat as a kitten, worked great. She won't go for much of a walk as she is always distracted, but it is nice for her to be outside with us, since we spend so much time out there. Plus she eats the cabbage moths for us, so they don't eat our vegetables.

My gear grinder is when they say, "It's Ok. He/she is friendly!"
