Connor Mackey signs with the NYR
https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2023...rouillard.html
The New York Rangers have made two additions to beef up their defensive depth, signing Connor Mackey from the Arizona Coyotes and Nikolas Brouillard from the AHL’s San Diego Gulls to one-year contracts.
Both are likely destined for AHL Hartford next season, especially with the Rangers further fortifying their blueline by signing Erik Gustafsson to a one-year deal today. Both players were signed to a league-minimum cap hit of $775K, with Mackey earning a $400K salary in the minors and Brouillard earning a $225K salary in the minors with $275K guaranteed.

Speaking of offensive defencemen who suck at defence... Gustafsson after he was on the Flames is on his 6th NHL team in 3 years!

Mackey is actually a pretty good AHL defenceman. He seems to be unable to take the next step though, and at almost 27 years probably doesn't have much runway left.

Needs to be more edgy, get rid of his vanilla bland style and change his name to Konnar.

Good riddance. That guy was a tire-fire.

He was a better AHL defenseman than Valimaki but it appears the roles reversed in the NHL.

Conroy has some real gems on his list of those he scouted, but this was a miss.

The much bigger miss was Treliving/Sutter keeping him on the main roster over Valimaki.

Pretty sure every NHL team has fans in knots over decisions made around 7th defensemen and 13th forwards.

Good riddance to a guy who was gone already at the deadline.
Also, this deal is old news as it was done at the beginning of July.

We can thank Connor Mackey for putting the Flames eyeballs on Walker Duehr though.

I'd never call a free asset that played NHL games a miss.

To Vinny's point perhaps the bigger miss was how the team handled him. That said the Flames chose Mackey over their own 1st round pick. That's not necessarily a free asset. And compared to other players who have made meaningful contributions to this team and their current clubs that Conroy was responsible for scouting this was, IMO a miss.
