You can't compare UFAs to UFAs. Wheeler likely picked NYR and signed there for what they could afford. It's not like he was available to the Preds for the same price.

Not really fair since NYR has always had significant privilege in getting players for nothing due to location.

Basically paying the same cap hit for Duchene with buying him out and Nyquist for 3.1 million… think I would rather have just kept Duchene if I was a preds fan

Well, I assume you guys are correct considering the deal however something tells me if the Predators were offering Wheeler even 1 year at >$3mm he’s going there over New York.

My point is this is a horrible signing.

Almost certainly he had offers for more money elsewhere but chose the Rangers.
