What a fun day
It’s after 6 on Canada Day and the Calgary Flames haven’t done anything embarrassing.
This follows up a draft where they also didn’t do anything embarrassing.
Perfect - do it again.

Any day your team does not sign players on a day designed for overpayment both in term and money is a good day.

I hope that this is a strategic choice we can look forward to, and not one imposed on the team by simply being handcuffed by Treliving pooping on the organization before he bounced.

Devils advocate then, you have a bunch of players that can walk for nothing in one year and have pretty much universally said that they don't have much if any interest in signing a new contract, saying that they want to win and don't feel like this is the place to do it. The team added nothing and is worse off on paper for it.
Are we confident that the team will maximize value for these these players in the next year or are we on a slow march to rock bottom with a leadership group in denial?

a 5th and a throw in for Duclair would have been ok.
Sprong for 2M would have been ok.
Not a single other player or contract signed today would have changed the Flames fortune next year. Those spots are better used on our young guys honestly. We don’t need grizzled vets signing 1-3 year deals honestly, they’re not going to move the needle.

but they also haven't done anything, winning teams make improvements instead of watching their competition get better, should we not be doing something ?

I am actually really surprised for the most part that the GMs active today managed to keep the term on lots of these contracts down to the bare minimum.
Lots of guys getting their last kicks at the can today.

That’s not true, we’ve gotten rid of the big meanie Darryl and his henchmen. All is good now, I expect nothing less than a Stanley Cup next year.

Is there some master plan you would have preferred where the Flames suddenly become Stanley Cup contenders by overpaying for players who other teams let walk away for free?
Conroy gave the perfect answer today by saying this team needs to start getting younger and building from within by giving their own young players a fair shake. God, what a refreshing perspective that was after the last 10 years of throwing retirement contracts at 3rd liners and filling the roster up with useless players on PTOs.

The thing is, again, these UFAs are largely walking away from teams, or being let go, for a reason.
They dont provide a lot of 'Wins Above Replacement' Value relative to their costs.
So yeah...why go out and grab some rando 4th liner if you think Duehr can do the job?
Experience counts, but theres a reason why a lot of these guys are essentially standing at the Cash Corner Job Fair.

They did improve by not bringing back Lewis Lucic and Stecher and blocking our own players who can come into the lineup and provide more speed and offence.
Unless you wanted Craig to move out salary so we could join the JT Compher sweepstakes.
You can be quiet in free agency and improve internally

i see buy outs and trades of unwanted players and fresh faces signed, i didn't see the press conference but if he said wants to bring youth from within isn't that more reason to evaluate the older expensive players and make changes?
master plan? shouldn't they be improving like the other teams? alot of good signings today and nothing from the flames, klingberg for 4mil now that would have been a good fit on a team lacking offense.
imo they seem to stand pat, like this year at the deadline they obviously thought they were good enough hell sutter said we were good enough to go all the way.
I'm guilty of this too biut i fans are so used to being mediocre or losing that we are complacent and used to the thing every year it will work eventually some how.
well i think we should be following successful teams, the team that just 1 the cup isn't sitting back not changing anything, even the champion is wanting to improve, it feels arrogant that the Flames stand pat so often. It's not working so let's change it, i'm hoping conny will be the man to finally admit the current method isn't working and start a new direction.
going to
A team that is in win now mode doesn't have the time to build within with prospects.
I'm happy they want to give young guys a chance, too but it's very unlikely one of them makes it up and if they do it won't be enough.
The last time we really improved the time was trade deadline in '04 and the additions were a big part of the run.
All my opinion but i am frustrated and have a hard time believing that we won't get a bunch of lip service and then they do the same things as always always and either just barely miss the playoffs or squeak in for a 1st round defeat, i would like to see a bit more aggressive approach let's make it happen.
I hope i'm wrong and you're right and they are successful because I want to see success it's more important than my opinion.
Like a lot of fans i'm frustrated and impatient and probably panicking too early.
GO FLAMES!

Which winning teams made improvements today? What do you think the Flames could have done to make improvements?

Out:
Toffoli
Lucic
Lewis
Ritchie
Stone
In:
Pelletier
Coronato
Sharangovich
Duehr (maybe)
Wolf (maybe)
Stecher (maybe -I'm guessing here)
I think the team looks better right now than it did to start last season. Obviously there is still a long way to go, and there are likely to be some more significant changes.
