Career 35 point a year guy until last year. Gets 5.1 million. Good day not to be actively trying to sign players.

Yzerman quickly handing out some ugly deals in free agency.
He's had a rough week.

What a half assed job Stevie Y is doing.
Holl 3x3.4
Compher 5x5.1
Chiarot 4x4.75
Copp 5x5.625
I don’t get it.

That's like $1.5 too much.
That's brutal

Early on in tampa he had some bad contracts and buyouts, traded and draft luck, helped.

Those are all questionable deals for lower roster players. I get that they bring something the Red Wings lack, but all 4 of them? Did you really need all 4 guys at those price points?
This will be a day to forget for Steve.

Who did the wings not sign? Maybe easier to track that instead.

Yzerman could have had Hanifin for 17th overall and another prospect in all likelihood and signed him today for 6.5 a year. Instead he went the Holl and Gostishbere for 7.525 million.

I legitimately have no idea what Yzerman is trying to do.
This seems like the kind of desperate quick-fix scheme that Canadian franchises have used to accelerate their rebuilds, only to find out that they made a horrible mistake within a year or two.

But, but, $7.525M is for 2 players, and 2 must be better than 1, no?

Yeah that's just way too much money and term tied up in bottom 6 forwards and bottom pairing defensemen. Even if the salary cap rises these deals won't look better in time.

I think their ownership may be sick of their rebuild.
Detroit will be interesting to watch, because while they haven’t had draft lottery success, they have accumulated a lot of prospects - so if some of those start going off, look out.
…but the lack of top tier, absolutely elite prospects outside of Raymond and Seider is questionable.
What I don’t understand is the death by a thousand mediocre cuts approach. Yzerman has been signing, almost exclusively, the typical poor value contracts normally found every summer. If I were to look at the last little stretch of free agent work it’s nothing but a list of “don’t do that”.

I doubt that Hanifin is available for $6.5M.
Those 2023 draft picks were considered gold this year.

I think it's possible Yzerman may not be the genius he's thought to be.
I think their re-build is going to suffer the same problems as others - lack of elite talent.
And I think some of his draft picks (e.g. Cossa) were poor.

Also, it's amazing how good you look when you have the foundation he had.
1st Overall - Victor Hedman
1st Overall - Steven Stamklos
19th Overall - Vezina/Elite goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy
When hit on those 3, and then manage to draft well in the later rounds (Point, Kucherov), yeah...you're gonna win.
The difference between drafting 1st and 6th is stunning for what it can do for your organization.
