Stone announces retirement, joins the Flames development staff
He will join the devlopment staff to work with the D.
Here's the original rumor:
The boys on Barn Burner mentioned that somebody told them that Stone has got a job in the organization, but won't be playing anymore. Around the 1:10 mark.
Stone was a great story over the last couple of seasons, and I have nothing but respect for the guy. Hopefully this move will work out for both the player and the organization.

This actually makes sense with Conroy's press conference recently.
He said he would reconnect with Stone about a position, but just knew he wanted to be in Calgary. I assumed it was regarding another playing contract, but a player development type of role would make sense too if he's ready to retire.
I like it! Maybe this is the flames new strategy, 50% of practices are now slapshots. The only acceptable pass is to yourself to get into shooting position, the only acceptable shot is a slap shot
WWMSD! You think Stone would get all cute and pass that puck across the slot?! #### no he wouldn't, he would rifle that thing 95MPH into the top corner from the hashmarks. You think Stone gives a #### if you're coming in for the block? Guess what, you'll only do that once. Just opening up the lanes for more blasting. Does Michael mother####ing Stone care if you're wide open backdoor, or trying for some bull#### tip? Abso####inglutely not. Blast away, crossbar height, all goddamn day.
Keep your heads down and your shot counts up.

I'm surprised one of our insiders were not all over this. Seems like something that would be talked about within the organization at a number of levels.
It seems like he could still play, but with the Flames wanting to give younger players a chance, I can see why the Flames might prefer to move on. And if it really is Calgary or bust for him, finding a spot in the organization so he can start building toward a post-playing career in hockey seems like a good thing.
It's really too bad his career had so many set backs. I remember when he was considered a really good prospect and he was living up to it before some bad luck.
