Monumental Sports & Entertainment, owner of the Washington Capitals, Wizards and Mystics, has explored moving the teams from downtown D.C. to nearby Virginia, the Washington Post reported Saturday.
The Post reported that Monumental, which is headed by Ted Leonsis, is looking into a site in northern Virginia not far from a new Amazon headquarters.
Most of that area of Virginia is just a suburb of D.C. This isn't a big deal at all. Just trying to make it easier for most of their key demographics to get to games.

If it's close to Amazon's HQ2, it would be much closer to central DC than the old Cap Center in Landover was. It will also be close to the Pentagon, which means it will be close to the big defense contractors which are located close to the Pentagon.

In recent months, representatives from Monumental Sports & Entertainment — which owns the Washington Capitals, Wizards and Mystics — and the Washington Nationals have spoken separately with city government officials about funding for improvements they deem necessary to their facilities. Monumental executives also have talked to Virginia government officials about relocating the Capitals and Wizards from downtown D.C. to Northern Virginia, near Amazon’s new HQ2, according to three people with knowledge of the situation who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about negotiations.
Ah, there it is.

I will tell you personal experience being here the past decade, that it sure is not a "fun" city. Great place to raise a family? Absolutely. Things to do and places to have fun? Hell no

Obviously not the same is relocating the team but it is the same old story we have seen a hundred times. So many people live in or near that metro area and with so many counties, municipalities and taxing jurisdictions, it’s much easier for ownership to play them off of each other.
But the HQ2 for Amazon has been scaled back considerably so that could be good or bad for putting an arena around there.
