Default 2023 NHL Free Agents

I came across this top 50 ranking list on Daily Faceoff, via a Ryan Pike editorial on Flames Nation.

https://www.dailyfaceoff.com/news/br...e-agents-board

https://flamesnation.ca/news/calgary...ree-agent-list

Some of these guys may be re-signed before July 1st, but for the most part, this is the list. Of note, Orlov is ranked #1. Matthew Phillips is ranked #49. You know it is a weak year when a 25 year old Group VI player with 3 NHL games is in someone's top 50.

Are there any guys that should interest the Flames? I don't think we'll have cap space to go after big names, but there are a few down the list that might be worth a look. Drouin might interesting on a show-me deal.

At those projected cap hits, O'Reilly, Tarasenko and Domi are all very interesting players. Also like Gudas

Thanks for this! I really like the top-5. Tyler Bertuzzi would be great, but I don't think he would sign here. JT Compher is a great two-way guy, and I've always been a fan of Killorn- although he's getting old. I would take Tristan Jarry, or Korpisalo if we could get rid of Markstrom. And there's Gudas.

Not reading any of this stuff but the Flames should not be in any position to sign any FAs this year. No need to overpay for mediocre aging assets.

0 guys I can see that move the needle. We need to play the kids so we need to stay away.

Unless we trade all 7 UFA's and sign 1 guy that is young and signs for reasonable amount. Even then you might just play your way out of a top 5 pick and be nowhere near the playoffs

There'll be a few value contracts towards the end of the summer for filling the odd depth role.

That’s one terrible list of UFA’s.

There really isn’t one interesting player there.

This is why our guys with 1 year left should be worth a bit more.

Conroy told the story at a STH event I went to.

It was late in the 2013-14 season and Treliving hadn't been hired yet, so Burke gave the task of negotiating with the college free agents to Conroy. They were interested in signing Hathaway, but didn't want to tie up an NHL contract spot for him, so they offered him an AHL-only deal. Hathaway's agent called him back and said they had received NHL offers from a few teams, but if the Flames were willing to go with an NHL deal, they'd consider it.

Being his first negotiation, Conroy went to Burke and asked for his advice. Burke told him the agent was bluffing and to tell him if they had received an NHL contract offer, they should sign it before the team changes their mind. Conroy did that and a short while later got a call back from the agent saying they'd take the AHL contract.

JT Compher would be a nice addition up the middle and make it easier to move Backlund or Lindholm.

If they trade a few pending UFA'S I would try to sign anyone they can to 1 year deals then try to flip them. Staal would be a good replacement for Backlund if he's dealt, Ghost would be for Hanifin,.Domi is still a solid option, and I would try to see if Drouin could play with Huberdeau.

It's not star studded list but there is a lot of potential to help the team.

If Hanifin or Taney are moved, I would look at Soucy as a good middle sixer.

If we had the cap space I would take a look at Domi.

He contributes offensively, is physical and has a real drive to win.

History is there for the locker room problems but that appears to be behind him.

If he accepted a 5 year deal around 4.5 to 4.75 I don't think anyone would have a problem with the deal. With him being one of the better players in this year's class I fully expect him to be overpaid and probably signs someone at near 6 million.
