Sure, but in what dimension are you not making sure you're getting a 1st back in a Lindholm package?

Interesting. If the Flames are trading two centers they should try and get back actual good returns though.

Then trade Hanifin for the rights to Jankowski, center depth problem solved!
It has to happen now to make sense though.

Trade anyone older than 24 I say. Don't want to be handing out term and dollars to players on the wrong side of 25.

You’re not wrong, but your trade ideas aren’t particularly inspiring.

Sure, but your trades are undervaluing our players by a long shot.
“Let’s sacrifice the season” for a 2nd and 3rd round pick? Oh boy, how exciting.

They will probably have no choice to make some changes that bolster the prospect base while making next season's roster worse on paper as at least three contributing players could be dealt by the deadline. Even if Edwards doesn't like the idea of rebuilding it's going to happen to a degree because of the amount of players on expiring deals.

The Flames should trade EVERY UFA this offseason as well as Vladar (Excluding Kylington as who knows what will happen this year but I'll pencil him onto the team for now).
I'm not going to speculate on returns , that's the GM's job to get the best returns. But let's make a statement that every trade is for picks and players who are not going to be in the NHL next season for simplicity of this exercise.
That would leave the Flames with the following roster:
Huberdeau (10.5) Kadri (7) Mangi (5.8)
Coleman (4.9) XXX Dube (2.3)
Coranto (.925) Ruzicka (.760) Pelletier (.860)
Duehr (.825) XXX XXX
Hanifin (6.25) Andersson ( 4.55)
Kylington (2.5) XXX
XXX XXX
Markstrom (6)
Wolf (.813)
Cap Hit: 54 million
Cap Room : 29.5 million
Now take that cap room and weaponize it to trade for good / breakout candidate from other teams that they need to 'dump' and stabilize the roster.
Some examples from last offseason
Fiala for Faber and a 1st
Monahan for a 1st
Bjorkstrand for a 3rd and 4th
Connor Brown for a 2nd
Pacioretty for futures
Brent Burns for 3rd and parts
You can also retain on trades if it increases the return, and also dip into short term UFA's like what we did with Zadorov and Gudbranson (2 years max)
The Flames need to start thinking more progressive instead of overpaying long term FA deals and locking up their older players to long term deals.
I know they won't go this direction, but this is actually the teams best chance to avoid an eventual drawn out long and painful rebuild with a quicker rebuild, but also if you pick the right players to use the open cap space on, even compete for a wild card spot if things go right. And if they don't? You sell more assets at the deadline and take a great draft pick to inject into the younger core
|
I don't disagree with what you've posted, but if you think you can trade 7 UFA's to be in this market without taking any cap back, you are mistaken.
Yes cap is King, but that's because so few teams have any. To get maximum value in trading our players, we'll need to take back lots of bad contracts or teams won't be able to fit those players onto their team.
I assume you've talked with Murray and got his OK on tearing the team down?

Obviously bias, but projected 1OA 2024 is a stud Centre.
One of the few years that I’d join team tank.
While we’re at it, 2023 140th ranked NA skater would look great on out blue line too!

I'd agree if we didn't just sign Huby, Weegar and Kadri to long term deals last year

Sacrifice is the wrong way of putting it, but they certainly should make decisions on their UFAs that focus on the long term & not walk any of them to free agency.
If Conroy hasnt learnt that, he'll be gone quickly.
Miracle seasons aside, Vegas/Edmonton/LA are taking the 3 division spots and Calgary is playing for a wild card. That doesn't mean tank or not try, but make management decisions from a sober view of where you are competitively...for once.

You hope this organization learns from the end of the Iginla saga and the miniscule returns we got for him, Regehr, Bouwmeester, Phaneuf - and you try to re-stock the cupboards for the new core.
And realistically, I don't see any player on this team (short of young players who may yet bloom) as core players on a contending Flames team in the future.
I think this team will try to make a hockey trade with the expiring contracts. It may work for this upcoming season (we're due for some good luck) but I think it just kicks the can down the road.

Taking a while to get to 5000

All I ask is that if they sell, don't turn around and throw those picks at older players. Do what you said you'd do, build through the draft.
I'm fine if the mantra is make the playoffs, even if we all know they're lying to us.

The pending UFA's are the ones who may determine whether the Flames take the step in that direction. If they are unwilling to sign extensions, hopefully, the Flames will be willing to take a step back in order to build for the future.
