Default Goodbye Global Sports in Calgary!

Wow. that was an end of a great era.
Cami Kepke just announced that Global (2&7) will no longer be covering sports in their news telecasts anymore.

Tonight's sportcast was the last one ever. Since I was a kid this was the only local station I followed especially due to Sports at 11. They had so many key sports people in Calgary. Ed Whalen, Ron Mclean, Grant Pollock, Mike Toth, Mike Lownsborough, Ron Manz, Ryan Leslie and Brendan Parker.

I PVR Global News every night and most times I don't even watch the sports segment so it was probably something that was underperfoming. Still it's kind of sad that it is gone.

Global Sports on channel 7 was such a huge part of my childhood. They had a dedicated 30 minute sport show (if I remember correctly). Brings back some good memories.

Toth and Lownsbrough together on Sports at 11 was amazing back in the day. You got your fill of highlights along with some comedy gold...they were hilarious.

Elvis and the Honky Tonk Man!

I think most people already get all their highlights from TSN and Sportsnet. They did cover some of the high school and University/College events in the city.

Agreed. I had fond memories of watching sports at 11 whenever I was in town visiting my grandmother. Haven’t watched sports highlights on the local tv news in ages, as TSN or SN gets me the news I need and have little to no care for local sports(high school, juniors or uni). I don’t like to see people lose jobs, so I hope most get a chance to do other things.

I remember the days when, during Stampede, Sports @11 (or was it already @11:30 at that point?) basically became like a comedy sketch routine with a little sports sprinkled in. Toth, Lownsborough, Manz and POLLOCK were basically like Calgary's Kids in the Hall.

Sad to hear this news even though I haven't lived in Calgary for nearly twenty years.

Wow. The end of an era.

Here is Cami’s tweet:

Cami later says she will be staying on at Global, just doing news instead of sports.

So they aren't going to talk about sports at all anymore? I guess any Flames related topics, they'd treat it as a news story, and won't be covering any highlights. Probably a way for Global to save some money in not needing to pay Bell / Rogers for highlight rights. Sad to see it go, but honestly, I'm guessing most people consume sports scores / news / highlights either through SN/TSN, or go on-line. So I can see why they did it.

I leave it on in the background while I work out after work. It's kind of nice to catch up on all the local things happening.

Global had some good Stampeders reporting that was different from TSN.

The most memorable moment on Sports at 11/1130 was when Ron Manz did one of the first bungee jumps in Calgary and the cord was too long, he missed the mat they had on the floor and he smashed his face into the hardwood... lol

I didn't for the longest time until the PVR came out. I watch local news and State TV every night.

I really don't get why you'd cut sports out of your broadcast....is the 5-10 minutes spent just going to shift to more ads? If anyone is still watching local news at all, this is now just another reason to stop entirely.

Sad.

Thursdays. UofC. I would come back to 3rd Kananaskis from the Den after drinking cheap pitchers (yeesh), sit in our skanky lounge and watch sports at 11 with folks who would be friends for life.
