Default Shiffrin ties Stenmark

Mikaela Shiffrin ties Ingemar Stenmark in World Cup skiing wins in Sweden yesterday.

This was thought to be a Gretzky like record in ski racing circles.

As an ex-racer I think there is an asterisk...when Stenmark raced the Suger G event did not exist and he did not typically race in speed events (the downhill). He was truly a slalom and GS specialist. Mikaela skis in 3 (Super G, GS and slalom) so for me, apples to apples her total wins vs Stenmark should just be in slalom and GS...having said that a win is a win.

Thoughts?

These are people. I'm sure.

I dont know who they are, or what they do, but I feel confident that they exist.

Well, skiing circles are smaller than hockey circles I suppose.

I know most of you guys don't know/care about this, but this is pretty huge over here. In terms of popularity, alpine skiing in Austria is pretty much like hockey in Canada, so ... huge.

Of course it's hard to compare eras, but Stenmarks record has stood forever and, like Yikes said, was comparable to Gretzkys status. I do think Hermann Maier would have beaten it without the motorcycle crash which severely derailed his career, and for a while, it looked like Lindsey Vonn could get there, but because of injuries she just fell short (82).

I can't speak to anything before the 90s, but Shiffrin is the GOAT from the timespan I have seen. She won about a third of all the races he participated in, which is just bat#### crazy to think about. And I do think the OP is slightly unfair to her, she has also won a few downhill races ... if we just want to compare slaloms and giant slaloms, it's 86 to 72 for Stenmark, but I have no doubt Shiffrin will beat that too. She's still young (beating that record at only 27 ... again, hard to put into words just how good she's been), so if she wants to continue her career for a few more years, the sky's the limit. Unless the decides to hang em up before 30, I doo think she cracks 100 wins easily when all is said and done.

Only 5 of those wins were in the Super G.

Shiffrin has been racing for ~12 years and is only 27 years old.

Stenmark won his last 7 races over the age of 27.

Lindsey Vonn won 82 races (compared to the others at 86). Not exactly Gretzky having more assists than any other player had points.

Also, ski racing really needs to a do a Drive-to-Survive style show. It's a hard sport to follow (at least in North America), but it could be a very cinematic show. Attractive female athletes, amazing alpine scenery, crazy high speed crashes...what's not to like?

They did one for golf so I’m not sure they could possibly do worse.

The white circus does not have much of a following in NA unless your grew up on skiis not skates like yours truly. In Europe, it is HUGE.

I grew up watching ABC's Wide World of Sports. Alpine events were one of my favorite Sat afternoon watches, that and boxing.

For sure. Even the on-course advertising for N.A. races is mostly Euro only brands. Someday I'd like to try Rauch orange juice.

I can’t say that I follow the skiing circuit, but I do know who Hermann Maier is, and of course, Lindsey Vonn.

The other… who are two people who have never been in my kitchen?

The real question is whether or not Shiffrin received consent from Stenmark to tie him.

He will hand her a ski when she breaks the record, but people will over-analyze his body language and facial expressions to determine whether he is okay about the record being broken or not.
