Tips for VRBO/car rental Mexico - Telchac Puerto

Looking at flying to Cancun, renting a car and VRBO at Telchac Peurto for spring break, not interested in staying at a resort. kids are old enough now to spend time in a town and go out for dinner and self drive to sites/excursions.

Anyone been in this area? seems like a safe route if we stick to main highways and toll roads? Any tips?

I’ve used Easyway to rent twice, not far from the airport. Surprisingly easy and they did a good job. Would use again. Just be ultra mindful of the really common ‘scan’ from the gas jockeys at the nearby gas station and make it clear you know exactly how much you’re giving them.
