Flames acquire Kristians Rubins from Sens for future considerations
Bolstering the Wranglers.
Rubins will not be eligible for any NHL regular season or playoff games this season because he was acquired after the trade deadline.

I liked Rubins coming out of junior. Hasn’t exactly blown the doors off of the pro leagues but should help the Wranglers.

Yeah today is the AHL's trade deadline day.
The future considerations might be sending a player on an AHL contract back to the Sens.

Some scouting reports from a quick google:
Quote:
Reliable blueliner with good size and mobility. Needs to inject more physicality into his game but has third-pairing upside.
|
https://dobberprospects.com/player/kristians-rubins/
Quote:
A left-handed D who is excellent at retrieving pucks in his own end. His speed ensures he's first to a lot of dump-ins, excellent footwork and a long reach allow him to close the gap on races he does lose. When the puck turns up ice, the Marlies have employed his top speed to make a 4 man rush.

Quote:
At best, he's looking to be a third-pairing defenseman who can mix in well with a more offensively minded option from time to time. At 6-foot-5 and over 200 pounds, Rubins has good size, although he could be a bit more physically demanding at points.

Nope. CapFriendly has the details:

If he signed with the Flames after the deadline, then he would be eligible for regular season games.

What would be the point of the trade deadline though then with half the teams not making the playoffs + a few on the bubble at time of deadline

I believe Rubins will actually become a Group 6 UFA after this season. Purely additional depth for the Wranglers' playoff run.
I would imagine he'll take Josh Brook's spot in the lineup until Meloche is ready to return.
I don't know if we'll see anyone subtracted from the Wranglers' roster here. Feels like a GM doing another a solid more than anything.

I'm pretty sure Gilbert is now ineligible for the AHL playoffs now too right? Could be a factor in a depth blueline pick up too.

This is correct. And with Meloche injured they needed more help. Very young group down there.
