Sutter's personality and the way he goes about dealing with the media rubs a lot of people the wrong way. Understandably so.
So, when the wins aren't piling up like they were last season, those people start to get very noisy and are out for blood.

I think the media doesn't like his attitude, so they are spreading hate to the public.

He has had young guys in the lineup this year. Ruzicka has played about 33 games and 2nd pp. Zohorna,Duehr and Phillips have all played. Mackey has had his shot and did not look very good. The NHL is not a development league. You need to be ready to contribute right away. Sutter has obviously not liked what he has seen when these players have been given there chance. This is more of a lack of talent issue than not playing the prospects. The type of players that have drafted. More negativity needs to be directed at Treliving.

I actually really enjoy how he handles the media. He holds them accountable for the dumb, repetitive questions they ask. He is very calculated in his answers. His response to the question of how did pelts play. What was his number was Sutters response. Just playing with media. Some articles were written about how he talked of pelts and it was way overblown. Behind the scenes he talked to pelts and the player felt good. This is more important than what we hear at the podium. People like Sutter are so driven to win sometimes they rub people the wrong way. Michael Jordan was like that. They know what it takes to win.Behind the scenes Darryl is very different. Toffoli and Pearson were also two young guys who excelled under Darryl.

I'm a huge Sutter fan.... but listen to 1 post game presser. Sutter will cut off every single reporter as they're asking him questions. He's straight up rude.

The media are just a bunch of puppets. All Sutter is doing with the young guys is just trying to keep them level headed. We have seen how the media have tried to overvalue these players and compare them to other players.

I wouldn't say Phillips played. 6 minutes on the 4th line and then back to the Wranglers.
He may not turn out to be an NHL'er but I'll bet some other team gives him an extended look to see. And we'll have developed him for nothing.

Sutter's a winning coach, a lifelong hockey guy. So what's not to like?
He is difficult with the media, he almost never gives you what you want to hear. I remember back when he was coach the Flames, what, 15 years ago or something? And they lost a close playoff game and someone asked Sutter what needed to change and he said "I thought we played great." And that's not enough for some fans. In some ways it's a really deep answer, but it comes off as flippant or even stupid maybe. But what's he supposed to do, reveal some master plan for the next game in a media scrum?
Same with the Pelletier situation, he intentionally played it down in the media because it was fun to do so.
Why was Sutter fired after winning two cups with LA? Because the players couldn't do what he wanted, which was to physically destroy every team every night. Dustin Brown was pretty candid about the good and the bad with Sutter - the good, communication is real direct. The bad - you just can't be expected to play titanium-man hockey for 80 games, it's insane. So the players kinda tuned him out.
Here, this year, we've seen all kinds of decisions that have been .... peculiar? With the game on the line, and needing a goal.... out goes Lucic, Lewis, and Rooney for an offensive zone draw... like, it's just been weird here and there. Is it a message to players? Is it a fanatical devotion to rolling 4 lines at all times? We don't know, and that's difficult as a fan.
His reliance on a goaltender is well established, and it hurt the Flames last year, and probably this year too. Vladar probably should have had a start against the Oilers in the playoffs, Marky was looking shaky. And this year, same thing, just roll Markstrom back out no matter what, like there's just no way Vladar is getting 3 starts in a row, there's nothing Vladar could do to earn that, and that seems foolish to some of us.
The team has looked out of sync this year, and no wonder, but I think a lot of us were hoping that an experienced coach would be able to get things looking right a lot faster. And yeah, it's a new top line, and yeah, the defense is stripped of a really important piece with Kylington gone. But things have looked like a kindergarten fire drill pretty often and as a fan you wonder why, and of course, Sutter's explanations to the media are monosyllabic, so it's hard to think "Oh, this is going fine." Hard to trust "the process" whatever it is.
The team doesn't have elite scoring talent, so they have to out work opponents. Sometimes they manage it, sometimes they don't.

I don't understand the hate when most were already familiar with him and how he takes media questions
I also don't agree with just pledging ourselves to him
This new returned version of Darryl still has to prove some things to me
I don't dislike him over what he says on the mic, but I'm also in wait and see mode with how he handles this team and whether he can get them to work as a group and win consistently as a group
That's much more important to me
The thing I disagree with him most fervently is on goaltender usage, but I also can't blame him for giving the 6 million dollar guy regular starts as long as he could just in case. I think we are getting to the point though where you have to go with the guy that has been more consistent

Personally I have been outspoken about how Sutter has handled the prospects this season going back to training camp, and thought his comments Saturday were stupid and unnecessary, but doesn't mean I hate Darryl Sutter.
Darryl Sutter is a great coach, who belongs in the HHoF one day.
Darryl Sutter was a poor GM long term, and his IMO drafting and development set the team back.
Darryl Sutter is needlessly a jerk in the media, and this year he's been worse than ever.
What is frustrating to me is that I feel like Sutter has had his most success when almost forced to gives youngsters a chance, and this season I feel like there is the opportunity to work more younger players in but it hasn't happened. And when it has happened for a guy like Ruzicka, their leash has been incredibly short compared to other veterans like Lucic or Ritchie.
Whether that is Brad Treliving or Darryl Sutter's fault is a different question - but personally I feel like all of Pelletier, Ruzicka, and Phillips could have been given more of a look going back to how the camps were set up in camp, and Zary with his play this year is knocking on the door too.
Hopefully Ruzicka and Pelletier can both step up and steal that spot...but Sutter has to give them the leash to be able to do that as well IMO.

When the team plays the way Sutter wants they are fine. They do look like contenders but when they don't play a team structured game things fall apart. One minute the team looks great, giving up only 3 shots against and looking dominate. Then its in our net. The team will be outshooting the opponent 17-6 but its 1-0 for the other guys. This is an individual issue not a coaching issue.

Sutter is an old school demanding, hard-nosed coach. When this process generates wins, no one cares about the things he says in the media or it's somehow labeled as genius rather than concern. When they don't win, everything in the narrative comes apart - the players who are grinding harder than for other coaches on other teams start to question the method to the madness and it flows out into the press.
To me it's pretty simple: Kadri + Huberdeau < Gaudreau + Tkachuk plus netminding struggles for Markstrom and this year's results make perfect sense albeit unsatisfying.

For me the main reason this team lacks success is save percentage. In so many games this year the opposing goalie has had the better save percentage. There are a few factors for this . Markstrom has not been very good at all. Flames lack of high danger chances and low finishing ability. This is a individual result not a coaching issue. Sutter can't score goals for the team or he is not the one making a terrible turnover and its in the net after only 3 shots on net a you were all over the other team.

Right, when they play a tough, demanding physical game, are super responsible with the puck, never make any mistakes in positioning or puckhandling, they can win. That's an amazing system all right.
Now, I'm being facetious there - perhaps that IS the only way to win with this group given the pieces on the board. But it's asking a lot to play a perfect game every night.
