That is WAY too young. I understand he had a rare disease that I assume led to his early death.
Read a few good stories on Twitter. One was from the Athletic about how Odjick went to Russia but didn't tell anybody because he wanted to surprise Bure so nobody picked him up at the airport. He went to the KGB office (why?!) and told them he was there to see Pavel. The KGB, after seeing his face with the scars, answered the door with machine guns lol.
Also this one below and Gino's link to Ferland.

It sounds like Gino had Amyloidosis.
Quote:
What is amyloidosis?
Amyloidosis is a rare disease characterized by a buildup of abnormal amyloid deposits in the body. Amyloid deposits can build up in the heart, brain, kidneys, spleen and other parts of the body. A person may have amyloidosis in one organ or several.

He also suffered from the effects of multiple concussions. I recall an interview where he said getting hit made him feel good and craved it. He likened it to an addiction. He talked about how by the time he retired, he couldn't even find his way to the arena anymore, he forgot how to tell time, couldn't recognize people, and the other guys on the team play simple card games with him and would always beat him because he just couldn't think any more.
Seemed like a good guy off the ice, but man, was he a mean player. Back in a time when of course every team had a player like that on their roster.

He worked out at the gym my daughter worked as a receptionist for at 18 or 19, her first job and all, some guy was fairly rude to her about the lack of towels or something, basicly a 'roided ######bag who had asked her on a date and she'd turned him down, Mr Odjick made it clear what would happen if he carried on that way, my daughter never had a problem again, I will sadly miss him, a gentleman of the old school and an inspiration to every native kid in East Vancouver in his day. Britannia rink should retire his jersey

Brutal that he was so young. Puts things in perspective. Life is short.

Sad he died so young. Great community member. On ice tho all I remember is he was unhinged. He Burtuzzied guys befor Burts iccedent. I remember he cheap spotted Lindros from behind 2 times in a row .
Off ice he seems like a outstanding guy . On ice he's luckily to not have seriously disabled some one like Todd Bertuzzi did.

Seems that some/lots of these "enforcer" type players pass away at younger than expected ages.
I wonder if the PA has any programs where they reach out to guys to try and proactively help them and their families

RIP. I have met Gino as well.
I was at a Blue Jay's game in Seattle years ago when he was still on the Canucks. The stadium is full of Canadians. The building started Gino, Gino and it went on for a while. The Seattle fans beside me were so confused.

Gino was a beaut through and through. Had the pleasure of meeting him a number of times when I worked for the Canucks and even played with him twice at Britannia. As others have mentioned, just a genuinely good, humble dude.
