How about this:
Starters (1RW, 1LW, 1C, 2D, 1G) - 50% fan vote, 25% player vote, 25% coach and GM vote.
Then select the next nine highest-scoring forwards along with the six highest scoring defensemen from each conference, factoring in that every team needs representative.
Goalies, you take the conference leaders in wins and shutouts, taking the runner up in the event one guy has the lead in multiple categories. If you need a 3rd tie-breaking category, it’s save %.
You can still have the fan vote, and being a starter “means” something.
Beyond that, you guarantee yourself the maximum amount of talent on display.
And then there’s no guesswork. There’s no controversy. It’s automatic. A guy wants to be an All-Star, score more points or start an internet campaign.
It’s the All-Star game. Why wouldn’t you want the highest-scoring lineups possible?
Oh, and not for nothing, bring back 5v5. And bring back captains fantasy drafts. Captains are the 2 top vote getters overall. And make better jerseys. Stop letting colour-blind kids design them with highlighters.
I suggest all of this knowing “kill it” isn’t an option the league will pursue, so… yeah.
