What an incredibly selfish act. The emotional damage done to family members is irrepairable.

I've been through it as I'm sure many here have. It's just horrible.

When you consider the timing it makes it even worse.

Christmas is a popular time for suicide. This is by far the most social season of the year, and when one already feels like an outcast, the stress and depression overwhelms many.

Man, I've been through it myself, but I've also had experience on the other side of the looking glass as well.

It is impossible to judge his "selfishness" until you've walked in his shoes.

This is a truely sad day for everyone involved, and I feel deeply sorry for everyone.

Sorry Dis, but I have to agree with this as well. As someone who has experience regarding suicide - my fiance's brother took his life - I don't think that you can quite say selfish at all.

All the best to Tony Dungy's family.

It is nothing BUT selfish...what else wold you call it?

Sept.13th this year, after allowing my wifes best friend to move in with us, we go out there at 11:30 PM to see why she didnt come home (her floors were being re-done) for dinner. Her car is there, no lights on, and I KNOW something aint good. I looked through the garage window, but it was so dark i couldnt see anything. We call the police...from the moment that the poor guy arrived and used his flashlight til this very moment is simply put....brutal.

Selfish is a complete UNDERstatement. Its those left behind that have to deal with the reality.

Its BS and i have NO compassion for those that choose to check out whjile healthy and surrounded by loving people...its a frickin cop-out.

Meanwhile...families and folks are destroyed...yeah....nice call putz.

Sorry dude, none of us know the family situation.

We don't know if the person was suffering from mental illness, the thing is we do NOT KNOW. I am sure that in certain cases there is a good deal of selfishness, but it is not even close to an open and shut case Tran.

I dont know if I would characterize a suicidal person as 'healthy'. Look at Dungy's kid. By all accounts, he was raised in the kind of family any kid would probably dream to be a part of. Yet something ate at the kid so badly he killed himself. Sound like the type of thing a healthy person would do?

From a 'normal' person's perspective, it is ridiculous, and I agree, it is selfish. However, it is easy to sit in an ivory tower and judge others based on your view of reality. The thought process isnt so obvious when you are on the other side. In many cases, suicide is considered as a way to releive others from the burden that such a person percieves themselves to be.

You simply cannot try to fit an irrational feeling into rational thought. It just doesn't work.

Terrible news indeed. Tony Dungy has always demonstrated the utmost class and professionalism as an NFL head coach. But outside of that I don't really know any details of his life. I can't imagine how hard this has to be on him. It's something that certainly seems like it would be devastating.
