Brings back some memories, the game was better back then imo.
You kinda have to define ‘better’.
For the record…. I agree. But it was better in the same way pro wrestling was superior in the 80’s and 90’s.
Back then the game was way more violent, way more emotional, and had a far more colourful cast of characters. The hits and fights were next level. We had Rock em Sockem videos that today would be called “Match penalty and 20 games.” But it was destroying the players.
Take the worst NHL team today and put them up against the 89 Flames and they likely blow them out 20-0. But the 80’s team would make sure they got a few pounds of flesh in the loss.
I still love the game, but I agree, it was way more entertaining to watch. The players seemed so much more invested in the outcome.

I just thought the refs weren't trying to be the stars of the show or managing the game and the players could battle. And holy moly were goalie pads small, no wonder the games were high scoring. That Flames team was a powerhouse!

Because the Flames' original owners were good at many things, but they had never hired a GM and had no idea how to go about it. So when Fletcher left they promoted Risebrough because he was already on staff, and when they fired Risebrough they promoted Al Coates because he was already on staff.
Then they fired Coates and nobody was left on staff, so they hired… Craig Button.

I was at game 7 and remember quite well how loud the Dome was when the Flames went up 3-0. Then comes Tikkanen who skates over centre ice and fires one between Vernon's legs and the Dome goes silent. Another bad goal let in by Vernon at the wrong time and the rest is history

More games against hated rivals in your division made for more meaningful games that meant something to the fans. It added another layer of excitement and drama that is missing in today's games.

Surely, though, someone in the room had to have at least asked, "are we sure this 37-year old former player who was assistant GM for one season before going back to coaching is ready for this role?"

I would never want to go back to that defensive style. Good god defenders just hugged people until the puck left the zone.
I understand the nostalgia you guys have for that era and the added emotion and enthusiasm that the team and fans had. But I don't think that has anything to do with era's or anything like that. You were an up and coming team. You had the rival with a dynasty. The team was still relatively new to the city. There are several things that made Calgary exciting at that time.

Honestly, with how fast the game is today, and how closely the game is called in terms of slashing and obstruction, it must be like night and day from a referee's perspective. Back then, the ref's job was basically to make sure the teams didn't kill each other.

The more things change....between that series and the Vancouver series in 94 the Flames could have easily snagged another cup or two. So many chances to win those first round series.
