Default Saddledome literally falling apart

Quote:
Part of the roof of Calgary's Scotiabank Saddledome is falling apart. Literally.

Documents obtained by CBC News through Alberta's Freedom of Information legislation show that pieces of concrete have fallen loose from the roof's ring beam while other crumbling pieces have been removed to prevent them from falling.

In April 2021, the firm sent a letter to the Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation (CSEC) — which operates the publicly owned building — advising that sections of loose concrete were removed.

But it also stated that "the condition of the concrete around the ring beam is worsening at an accelerated rate."

Earlier this year, netting was installed around the ring beam to catch any pieces of concrete that "appeared to be imminently ready to fall."

We just have to be patient at this point, get the deal finalized and fast track construction as much and safely as possible.

Discussions on building a new state-of-the-art arena in Calgary have been dragged out for years, but an update is expected Wednesday.

Yeah, should have never come to this situation.

Calgary in general needs new buildings and infrastructure for a growing city and a city this size. How is it actually different spending billions on a green line to the suburbs and not contribute some for sports/entertainment venues?

"...a senior official who is familiar with the reports and the Saddledome told CBC News that there are no concerns about the stability of the roof or for public safety.

A pretty bold statement "no concerns"...sounds a bit of a downplay considering they hired an engineering firm to investigate and did not make the report public. Who knows how safe it is but obviously this was something that was unforeseen until it occurred or netting would have been installed to the prevent damage. It appears to me that this is all part of the ongoing funding issues with a potential new arena.

Interesting that the lesson some are taking from this is that we need a new arena and not that the Saddledome should have been designed or maintained better.

There are older buildings than the Saddledome that are not falling apart.

Just glad the concrete is falling outside!

I have a better chance to dodge it on a sidewalk compared to in my seat and looking down!

Are these types of engineering reports usually released to the public?

Be pretty funny when we have to play in a 5000 seat arena as well, or the "Scotiabank Frank McCool Arena"

Guess the Flames ownership should be building a new building for their business to operate out of?

What is going on with that picture? It looks like the concrete lumps at the bottom have warped the ground around them. I can't visually parse what's going on there.

Rumour is that Murray Edwards has been paying Harvey the Hound to scale the building at night and jackhammer the concrete loose intentionally. This whole story was leaked by the team to try and pressure the city into increasing funding.

Does any of what you just said negate the fact that a new arena is needed though?

Hopefully the “Crowd blew the roof off the place” doesn’t become literal.
