Is there a reason Aconite is found in kitchens? Hopefully this isn't nefarious.
Google search: "Aconite is a plant that’s native to many areas of Europe and Asia. Its stalks are loaded with purple flowers, so it’s an appealing perennial plant for ornamental gardens.
Each blossom is shaped like the hood of a medieval monk. This has inspired many of its other names, like monkshood, friar’s cap, and auld wife’s huid.
Aconite is also called wolf’s bane. Historically, shepherds used raw meat laced with aconite to bait and kill wolves.
Although there are many varieties of the plant, all of them are thought to be toxic. But some people believe that aconite has healing powers."

Damn, that is scary!
From the reddit thread, it sounds like a similar poisoning as the suspected cause of this case in Markham happened in Vancouver maybe, but not at a restaurant and was through an ingredient purchased from a store.

I LOVE this sauce for my chicken which comes on the side some times. It's a brown colored ginger sauce that is a bit grainy. Won't be eating this sauce anymore as I wasn't even aware of the risk.

Wolfsbane! Does Markham have a werewolf problem the rest of the country doesn't know about?

No. Even touching monkshood can cause a rash.

Its crazy that it's inside those commercial powders/seasoning packages - but that's also why I try to avoid consuming many foods from Asia that aren't from the major manufacturers.
Looking into it, the monkshood roots look very similar to ginger and I wonder if that's why they got mixed up.

"Hey how is ginger growing in a temperate area?"
"Dunno, climate change I guess."

Somehow a chain of Wolfsbane Beef doesn't sound like a successful business venture

A little dramatic on the thread title, no?
Was thinking this was Jonestown 2.0 before I read the actual news story.

York Public Health is warning consumers against ingesting or using two products as part of its investigation into unintentional poisonings at a Markham restaurant over the weekend.
In a statement, York Public Health said it believes the galanga powder may be contaminated with aconite — a substance sometimes known as wolf's bane, monkshood or the queen of poisons — that can severely affect the nervous system. Symptoms include numbness in the face and extremities, severe gastrointestinal distress and, in some cases, an irregular heartbeat. Ingested in large enough quantities, aconite can induce fatal arrhythmia of the heart.
The radix aconiti kusnezoffii powder is a form of aconite, harvested from the roots, stems and flowers of a specific genus of plants, that has been specifically prepared for use as a traditional medicine.
