Scored that big goal on Georges Vezina in the '72 Series.
In seriousness, though, my childhood nightmares of nuclear war disappeared under Gorbachev's leadership.

I can’t be the only one who thought Mikhail Grabovski simply because they thought Gorbachev had died years ago?

I just naturally assumed he'd been dead for years.

I find it extremely distressing that Gorbachev finally shuffles off this mortal coil when we're right at the highest inflexion point between nuclear powers since he tamped it all down 30 years ago. RIP to a deserving recipient of the Noble Peace Prize.

Purely from a hockey standpoint, I tip my hat to him as the man who first allowed Russian players to come to the NHL.

Because of what Jay said.
That, or I’m blind without my glasses. Thanks to whoever moved it, I was wondering why people were talking about his hockey career.

What's interesting about Gorbachev is he had zero intentions of actually causing the Soviet collapse as it happened and wanted the USSR to live on as a reformed entity even as it was falling apart, yet seen as largely responsible for the end of the cold war. He ruled over disasters like Chernobyl for example.
What is important is how he didn't use the Soviet army to intervene as Eastern Bloc countries and SSRs broke out and became independent and also acted towards the common good for humanity versus further escalating the cold war. He also implemented reforms within the USSR that eventually inadvertently facilitated it's collapse.
He's one of the most influential men in history and while he's remembered for causing the dissolution of the USSR, he was someone who wanted to reform through peace.

Anyone else see him speak at the UofC back in 2000 or so?
Glad I have that memory, but wish I'd been knowledgeable and mature enough to properly appreciate his role in history at the time.

I shook his hand when he was at the U of C back in the 90s.
