They may have known an offersheet was coming maybe?

Unsure how this sets up angles in the negotiations other than they knew an offer sheet was coming.

Plus this also guarantees they pay him 9m minimum, do we know if it's only for 1 year or 2? How does club Arbitration work?

Hoping it doesn’t get to this but I hope they can do 2 years. Gives them more time to trade him if it comes to that

I though club elected arbitration meant he could get 85 percent of his QO?

Please correct me if I am wrong!

I am a little unclear on club elected.. Does this mean it can only be a maximum 1-year deal, at or above the QO of 9 mil?

So it prevents an offer sheet, which prevents someone else from signing Tkachuk longterm and prevents the Flames from matching that offer and getting him longterm (or getting the compensation which likely would have been 4 first round picks). It guarantees that they will have to pay him equal to or more than his QO and if it goes through arbitration guarantees that he is in the same position as Mark Stone was in his last year as an Ottawa Senator as it can only be a one year contract. The only possible reason you would elect to go to arbitration is to ensure that you have him for game one of the season, because everything else that could happen without arbitration gives you more options to either get him signed longterm or get pretty good compensation for him (and I guess it give you more time to get a deal done because the arbitration won't be until August sometime).

This makes a ton of sense.

Don't think they were worried about offer sheet. They were worried he'd accept his QO which he can't now and be guaranteed only a 1 year deal with extension only being possible in 2023.

Smart move, basically gives them time until his arbitration to work out a long term deal.

Guess this gives the Flames longer to negotiate. I don't really think an offer sheet is a risk. Flames will likely match any reasonable offer. Otherwise, they'll gladly take four 1st round picks.

Still, because this extends the deadline for negotiation, we continue to play the agonizing waiting game.

I do not. And you should all be thankful.

As I said before, all of my named jerseys have been gifts. If someone is adamantly against Tkachuk re-signing here, just gift me a Chucky jersey and he either will not re-sign or will be traded by the deadline.

Its a guarantee.

Death, Taxes and Locke.

Was this to give the team more time to find a trade? Can you trade a player when you've elected arbitration?

Players with one year left of restricted free agency can only be awarded one year contracts

If Tkachuk was 2 years away from UFA, it would have been his choice of one or two years because the club elected for arbitration.

Prefer trading now and letting the receiving club hammer out an extension than signing a 1 year and scrambling over the next 350 days to trade an expiring player.

But if he has desire to stay then getter gone.
