Default Coaching changes in Florida; Paul Maurice new head coach

As per Kevin Weekes:

https://twitter.com/user/status/1536033287738732544

Seems like a bit of a hasty move, though Brunette said a few weeks ago that he wasn't sure he wanted to continue in the head role. It'll be interesting to see what happens there.

It's a bit surprising considering all the success they had this past season and sure they were swept, but the team that swept them very well might win the Cup.

UPDATE: Paul Maurice named Panthers head coach (Brunette to stay on most likely).

Highest scoring team in the Salary Cap Era (or something close to that). That's a pretty odd move..

Brunette rode the Q train totally, it wasn't his team. I don't think it's odd at all, in fact I would expect them not to bring Brunette back, he was totally out of his league in the playoffs.

Why would any coach who has an option go to Florida? Putting “Q” aside, they’ve kicked two good coaches to the curb over seemingly nothing.

Chance to win a cup with a dominant regular season team?

Although I do not see Brunette back as a head coach, I wouldn't be shocked at all if they retained him as an associate coach. That all depends on who they've targeted as a head coach, but he was valuable in many ways for the forwards and the offensive game. I think the head office had a problem with how they defended and how a few of their defensemen regressed over the season. Brunette couldn't really figure out that part of the game, hence why he feels he may not be ready for a head coaching gig. I think the GM agrees, but doesn't want to get rid of Brunette entirely.

This will be interesting to watch. I wonder if Tortorella is a potential target. I just don't see someone like Trotz fitting in well with this roster.

Tortorella is good with veteran groups for about 3 years which is probably Florida's window. Can definitely see that happening.

This could be a good sign for Brunette? These were all Q's guys right? Could mean that they are letting him pick his own staff

They'll probably get either Trotz or Cassidy is my guess.

Cassidy would be my bet and I think a great fit.
Can’t see Torts being a fit there.
At this point I feel like Trotz can pick any team he wants.

He played his best hockey for Hartley, Sutter, and Q. Yet never got a long stint with any.

not so great under Gulutzan, Peters, Ward, and Burnette outside of playoffs

I didn't follow the Panthers too closely to be a judge of Burnette, but Ward and Gulutzan in particular sucked. Peters seemed to typecast him as a 4LW right off the bat.

Well you know it's going to be bumped by Austin or Deluxe Moustache after he gets a secondary assist on the Panther's 9th goal in a 9-1 game.

I could see it. If they allow Q to be back, why not the Panthers where he was under contract. The whole firing was a dumb publicity stunt to begin with, they wanted heads to roll and big names like Bowman and Q were the perfect target. Meanwhile 100 other people got away with it, like the players.
