If Oil hits $1000 a barrel I'd consider it.
Otherwise, when hell freezes over. Born and raised Albertan.

Yes. Especially if the Liberals win again.
Canada needs Alberta a lot more than Alberta needs Canada. Plus, there is a real difference in political culture between Alberta and the ROC.

Yup, I feel no loyalty to Canada as the bulk of my family has arrived here in the last 30 years with only a small portion having actually been around pre-1920's.
I would support it mainly because Alberta would become a very rich country as well and would help all of the citizens well, hopefully like a better managed Quatar. Although when that oil runs out what would we do?
here is the seperation website:

It depends to be quite honest.
I really don't think the issue lies strictly with the Liberals here, but rather the current electoral/power distribution system we have put in place.
I'm really ****ed that Canadian Senators make $119,100 a year to do absolutely **** all, and not one single liberal has made an effort to change that.
They want the current power distribution system in 1 place, the house of commons. Controlled mostly by 1 person, the prime minister.
If Alberta separation is going to help get election reforms, then I'm all for it whether it be in Canada or Alberta alone.

Maybe try something like Dubai where they used their brians and business sense instead of their oil to be successful.

As one of my profs said recently, seperation is a weapon, and I'd use it as such.
Would I rather have Alberta seperate from a properly governed Canada?
no.
Would I rather have Alberta seperate from a 2 bit governed Canada?
Yep (especially with BC as an addition...)
(and unfortunetly to me, neither of the 2 majors is doing enough to take us out of 2-bit territory. See last weeks Economist's review of Canada)
mm I'd also like to see Alberta governed properly first, ie Conservitives of the 90's not the 00's

In a word?
Nope.
No matter what happened, seperating would be the last thing I would want to do.

I guess one problem with saying that you would support it if the Liberals get voted in again, is which political party in Alberta would be the one to raise the issue? The Alberta Alliance which I *believe* supports separation, is so far down in the opinion polls it isn't even funny...granted their support may improve if they came right out and said they support secession.

Yes.
And not really because of the Liberals, but because the party in charge (left or right wing) has never felt the need to correct the political imbalances that exist. Alberta, for all it does for this country, has absolutely no say in how it's affairs are conducted.
Simply put, Canada doesnt think much of Alberta, so I dont think much of Canada.

The AA actually had just over 9% of the vote in the last election. That's twice what the supposedly up and coming Green party got in the last federal election.
They arent a seperatist party, actually, but do support building firewalls, along the lines of what Quebec has done.

The only other issue that I have with seperation (I forgot to add it), is that with a high redneck population in Alberta with a large disliking for immigrants ( I can't go 2 min into a convo with a "true" Albertan without some sort of racial comment on asians/brown people) that these people would be alienated even though many are just as much an Albertan as everyone else. I could see it being a scary situation for some of them.

Born and raised in Alberta, love it here (for the most part) would I support separation?
Good lord no... Want to use separation as a weapon? Fair enough.
If Alberta separated I think I'd leave, and this from someone who's family all works in the oil patch (born and raised in Fort McMurray). I guess it would depend on the situation. It wouldn't be a decision I'd support though.
I don't think it matters what government gets in power, they'll all screw up, have scandals, and do things that **** us off. I think I'm more concerned about the conservatives gaining power than I am about the liberals staying in power... I'm not really a supporter of either party though.

Nah. Any "separation" would be some lame fake separation on par with what queasy Quebec separatists want with the currency and trade and close relationship and all that crap.
Or maybe we'd become Americans, and if I wanted to become a Yank I'd move there.
The whole "if the Liberals win, I want to separate" sentiment reminds me a lot of Alec Baldwin's bold "if George wins, I'm moving to Europe" and his wife said "I'm not going anywhere" and then George won and he didn't move. They did get a divorce though.
Considering Canada's rather good spot in the world, and Alberta's rather good spot within Canada, I'm always surprised when this separation business comes up. Why mess with a good thing?
A landlocked nation of 2 or 3 million people with hostile and/or predatory neighbours isn't exactly a spot I want to be in. The Americans would have a hell of a bargaining chip that can be summed up with the phrase "where else is the oil going to go"? and if you think the Feds mess with us now, imagine how'd they'd deal with Alberta if we were another country. The cheapest way to get all that oil out of here could turn out to be using those great big refuelling airplanes, assuming of course we are able to get airspace clearance from the neighbours.

Do that and Alberta is paying a hell of a lot more to pay for the socialism the rest of the nation expects.
