Do you want to watch the early games or just have a good dinner before?
For a good pre game dinner I always hit Native Tongues, amazing restaurant. But expensive.
To watch the early games in a pub atmosphere, with cheap happy hour beer you can hit St. James Corner.
Both are an easy walk or scooter ride to the done.

Not worried about a good Dinner, a Greasy burger and a good atmosphere would be more my flow. I spend zero time downtown, I actually forgot the scooters are even a option of transportation.

Hit the Ship for pregame and walk (or scoot) over. Did that last week, it was super easy and no lineup.

Rose and Crown patio was awesome when it’s nice and they wheel a large TV about to the deck

Rodney’s is kinda close and their happy hour menu 3-6/7 I forget is actually quite good.
Hys is also a pre-game favourite of my wife, but certainly not cheap.

If you're looking for playoff atmosphere, I would go to one of the restaurants on the Red Mile (17th).
But being a Friday, and game day, you probably need to be there by 2 or 3 o'clock.
I find it a great atmosphere before games, and then you can walk to the Dome. Might take like 30 minutes, depending on which restaurant you hit, but it is a fun walk, full of fans and energy.

I would recommend going to First Street Market. There are plenty of food choices (Saffron Street, Moose and Poncho, Pasta La Mano, Hi 5 Burgers, etc.) and it’s my go to before game day.

If you like a good deep dish style pizza consider Micheal's on 10 Ave. It's a relaxed place and doesn't get too busy. They also have a rood-top patio if the weather is nice:

Thanks for everyone's input. Depending on the timing of things, We might just walk 17Th and stop in at the places that look good for a beer and then keep on trucking. 17Th ave bar hopping if you will, final destination the dome! Long weekend Friday I figure things should be busy. Thought about getting red lot tickets but don't want to take the tickets from someone that would enjoy the whole game experience.

Went Home & Away for yesterdays game. (Beside St James). Great pregame spot.
Can’t go tomorrow but I’m going to try Central on 11th on Sunday.

Native tongues is not expensive.
Elbow River Casino consistently has good Chinese food. Fun fact -- Duncan Ly used to be their executive head chef before running/opening up a bunch of his own restaurants around Calgary and winning a bunch of awards.
You picked the best answer. Friend is from out of town -- go to 17th. Trolley 5 is the de facto headquarters. Blanco across makes some decent tacos/margaritas. Ship is a Calgary landmark. Good Viet subs around. N9na for interesting stuffed burgers. Lots of options.
