Default Sutter's praise for McDavid not sarcastic

Unlike the past playoff tactics Sutter has used to put pressure on others, he means what he says about Connor McDavid.

McDavid is so talented and good he doesn't even need to develop into a complete player!

Other generational players worked on improving their deficiencies in order to round out their game, which in turn allowed them to succeed in the playoffs. Ha, those fools!

Yeah, that's why those generational players didn't / don't get the right away McDavid deserves.

When all you get is praise and accolades, why would you work on the rest of your game?

Anything we may see in his two way game, I assure you Sutter does as well

Sometimes the best defense is a good offense

Also, this was the same interview where Sutter said he told his team to score 7-10 and expect to give up 5-8

Nothing he said was sarcastic

McDavid doesn't need to adapt his game to fit the playoffs, the NHL needs to change the playoffs so McDavid can win like he deserves.

Maybe I am missing something, but who says it isnt sarcastic? The author of the article?

Sutter calling someone with 4 points and a -1 in a game the best player on the ice? Not so sure.

Even the Oilers can’t “ruin” McDavid. He’s not Nail Yakopov.

They can only warp & poison his development as a player. He constantly bitches and dives to draw calls. The media cheers this on.

The game has never been cleaner or less intimidating. Yet it’s still stifling his ice capades according to the Sportnet and the Oilers.

Sutter knows all of this as well. He also knows that if they shut him down by playing a team game, everyone else on their roster doesn’t have a chance of scoring and the Flames move on.

Sutter has also made several comments about players who put up lots of points but are minus players or players who put up points but so t give big goals. There are layers to all his pressers.

I don't think Sutter was being sarcastic, but he's also a very canny guy and leaves plenty of important info in what's not said.

Of course it’s not sarcastic, but it’s also not pumping his tires for the purposes of independent hockey commentary, it’s for subtly issuing a challenge to his team.

Mcdavid's response was that of a true generational player and star

Steve Yzerman used to score 150 points a year and his team went nowhere. He changed his game, became a complete player — one of the best 2-way Cs ever to play the game — and they won a bunch of cups. Just saying.

In a nut shell his comment is “we can’t let him score 4 points a game and expect to win”

I'll say it again...

It's Sutter's world and we're all just living in it

I don't think it's sarcastic, I think the correct term is moreso gas lighting.

Sutter thinks that if a one way player plays 30 minutes / game. and the Oilers don't try to win as a team this series is already over. So he goes out and says, Conner your so great, please Conner show us how great you are, we'd like to bask in your greatness, in a very authentic way. Not because he wants to diminish his skill, but because he wants Conner to turn this into a Conner showcase.

It has been a tried and true coaching tactic forever: turn the spot light on the other team and let them have all the attention.

He's just making his team the poor, forgotten underdog again.

This is the way I see it as well. Sutter isn’t as effusive with praise to his own players-see the Guadreau interview about what Sutter said to him after the penalty shot goal and the team after that win.

McDavid is a great player; but that comment was made to make a point to HIS team, not unabashed praise for McDavid

Getting all the Russian stars out of the country and then drafting Lidstrom may have also played a small part

at the end of the day, it's more a message to his own team than anything else. You can't expect to win many games if you allow a single player to score 4 points per game, so let's not get complacent ... lots of work to do. I fully expect Marky to rebound and the team play better defensively in the next games.

Let McDavid have the limelight, I don't care. Stroke his ego for all I care, let everybody make it all about him. If the Flames play their game and to their strengths, it's still a lopsided series.
