The song "Sutter's Mill" by Dan Folgelberg came up randomly on my streaming service the other day and though I'd never heard it before, the title made it too perfect to not try to write some parody lyrics (don't worry - I don't have the musical skill to record an audio version!)
“Sutter’s Will”
In the Spring of two times eleven,
So the story, it is told,
Ol’ Darryl Sutter, who ranched just west of Wainwright,
Was looking for a silver Cup that he could hold.
Well, he moved down to Cowtown city
Where the word, like wildfire, spread.
And ol’ Darryl Sutter, with unfinished business,
Had come home to the C of Red.
For the fans, they came to boo their opponents
Every woman, child and man.
In their blazing red crested jerseys
They raised their voices up in the stands.
[Chorus]
Some players would fail and some would prosper
Some with try and some with skill,
Some would thank the GM for giving them a chance
And some would think first of Darryl Sutter's Will.
Well, they came from Sweden and Scottsdale
And they came from Jersey and Brampton,
With their dreams of finding glory
In this wild playoff land.
Well, some fell prey to hostile cross checks
As they tried to cross the blue line.
And some were hurt by head shots and slew foots
Or their hands slashed to cause great pain.
Oh...
[Chorus]
Some players would fail and some would prosper
Some with try and some with skill,
Some would thank the GM for giving them a chance
And some would think first of Darryl Sutter's Will.
Well, some hoped to go on to the Kings of California
While others thought a Battle of Alberta would be best.
And like the Spring of ‘89
They all wanted to win another Cup for the west.
And then the ghosts of Lanny and Iggy came behind them
And the ice was fresh for every game,
When Old Darryl Sutter went to meet the media,
He had not one extra word to his name.
Oh...
[Chorus]
Some players would fail and some would prosper
Some with try and some with skill,
Some would thank the GM for giving them a chance
And some would think first of Darryl Sutter's Will.
And some may doubt Daryl Sutter's Will
But those men's Cups are never filled.
