Default Benn fined for high-sticking in Game 3 of Stars game

I've disliked this guy since the fight with Iginla where he refused to remove his helmet.

I'm not sure if this was when Mangiapane was stuck in the back of the net and Benn was hitting him in the face or another incident. Surprised the slewfoot on Tanev wasn't looked at either.

Should have been fined for the slewfoot.
I'll say it again, but Benn is so slimey. Guy is one of the dirtiest players in the league and it almost never gets acknowledged

Oh, that'll teach him!! What a goddamn joke. Between that and the slew foot the guy should be sitting at least one game. If the situation was reversed and that had been Tkachuk or Lucic doing that to a Stars player, you damn well know there would have been a suspension involved.

No discipline for the slewfoot?

Lucic needs to send a message next game

Nobody needs to send a message. The tough guy act from all these guys is wearing thin. Calgary is much better on paper than Dallas, but they have been playing a few screws loose upstairs and they're not scoring. Gotta play with a little more skill instead of playing like a caveman. Forget Benn.

Yes. Make them pay on the scoreboard. Screw all the extra curricular crap and just play the sound fundamental hockey game that had them finishing atop the Pacific Division.

Yeah the last thing they need is waking him up.

What he did to Tanev IMO was far more egregious and nothing came from that. Kicking his feet out and throwing Tanev into the boards should have been a game misconduct.

That's how I see it right or wrong.

Looked bad in real time and looked worse in slo mo replay.

What’s hilarious is it’s a fine that constitutes being fined a quarter for Benn and he didn’t get any discipline on the ice during the game for either play. Furlatt has got to be my most hated ref in the recent era of the NHL. I can’t stand him.

I thought it looked awful live, but the slowmo replay seemed to show that Benn's skate never made contact with Tanev's skate to cause the fall, I think he was already falling when the skate came up. Granted, if he didn't make contact he sure looked to be trying to so it's moot. Dirty and dangerous play by a dirty player.

It would be nice if the guys on the panel would mention these things in intermissions to bring some awareness.
But no, they’ll just reach and talk about a phantom embellishment by Tkachuk when he clearly had his legs taken out from under him.
Oh, or debate a Flames goal and whether or not there was goaltender interference for 10 minutes.

Hrudey did show the Benn slewfoot, said it was dangerous and should have been called.

Exactly….it all started when we come out roughing it up like we are the underdog

For god sake, you are the favorite. You can win playing hockey.

The problem is that the wrong guys keep trying to send the message. We don't need Tkachuk and Anderson doing that. If Lucic sits for 5 because he got in a fight, I'm fine with it.

Slimy player.

His antics don't get the attention they warrant.

He's been playing on the edge his whole career.

These fines should be a percentage of what a player makes. a 5k fine for a league minimum player would be about a 60k for Benn.

The NHL rule doesn't require any skate contact just that the feet are knocked out combined with a backward pushing motion in the upper body. It describes exactly what Benn did and it should have been 5 and a game when he did it. Here is the NHL rule text:

Slew Footing is the act of a player or goalkeeper using his leg or foot to knock or kick an opponent’s feet from under him or pushes an opponent’s upper body backward with an arm or elbow, and at the same time with a forward motion of his leg, knocks or kicks the opponent’s feet from under him, causing him to fall violently to the ice.

NHL reffing hit a new low for me last night. Beyond the usual even up calls, because Calgary was focusing on the hockey the refs had to let stuff like Benn' slelwfoot and slash go, and call incredibly weak interference or trip calls on the Flames. Including a penalty in the third that won Dallas the game.

This. Lucic either fights Benn on their first shift together or he can watch from the booth. We've seen time and time again there are never instigator calls (see Anderson grabbed in game 1), so just do it. If we get an instigator call I'm fine with that too.

Benn is trying to hurt people. Lucic needs to step up.

Benn isn't stupid enough to go if Lucic drops the gloves. Are you willing to see the Flames shorthanded five minutes for nothing?

Yes. Because as we saw last game, the penalties will be even regardless of what occurs on the ice.
