Default Sutter spoke to officiating supervisor

But the Flames coach is also annoyed his players keep getting into scrums ... and not doing serious damage in them.

Some good quotes today.

He should talk to Rasmus Andersson and Matt Tkachuk first

You can’t really start all the bull#### then complain about it?

No word on the player who slashed Gaudreau in the neck and then scored 2 goals?

I don't think it's about missed calls. Those happen. It's about the idea of always taking two guys. There was a time they'd grab one and make it more painful for one team to prevent them from all the stupid stuff.

I guess you didn’t bother to look at the article and you assume Sutter can only exclusively be upset at one party?

Sutter’s frustration doesn’t stop at the refs.

He wants everyone to do their part to ensure more five-on-five hockey can be played in the series

The league for whatever reason has decided 5 on 5 is no longer a thing in the postseason. It’s not just the Flames series. The officiating league-wide has been trash.

Right? And like what's the record for most 4 on 4 play in a series?! Flames/Stars must be getting up there

It also doesn't help that fans expect every hit to be a penalty. All the stupid "ref you suck" chants are getting annoying

I read it. My point is you have dirty hand, don’t complain about it and that’s what they probably told him

I don't get the 4-4 stuff. I've never seen so many 4-4 in ~32 years of watching hockey.

I remember there's one play where the Stars player dropped his stick an grab a Flames player, I don't recall who, it could be Mang. Mang didn't drop his and was trying to get away, but the ref called a penalty on both. And that's complete BS. If you don't want to call a penalty, don't call. It's almost like he had to call it on the Stars but he didn't want to give the Flames a power play so, called both and play 4 on 4.

This league is soft and I’m starting to sour on it. The best part of hockey is the battles and the resiliency shown in the playoffs. A lot of that type of play is 5 on 5. For whatever reason the league has decided to showcase a different brand of hockey focussed on special teams.

Call me crazy but I’d rather watch a 1-1 game played in the trenches than an 8-4 beating with 28 minutes of penalties. Maybe I’m just bitter about the flames but this hockey has been pretty cringeworthy.

Neither hockey nor the world are so black and white that only one side has dirty hands. Regardless of Flames’ players culpability, there has been a silly amount of 4 on 4 even compared to intense regular season battles. If a problem has more than one factors, why only address one?

I think it’s fair, and within the scope of his job to bring up his concerns about the officiating. It also doesn’t necessarily detract from how he deals with it with his own players.

What does a coach say when an official seems to have it on for their team calling a one-sided penalties? They tell their players to step up and overcome it by being more careful and not give the refs the opportunity to make those borderline calls. However, that doesn’t mean the coach can’t or shouldn’t also address his concerns with the officials.

I remember the same play and you're right.
They've been doing this a lot, i guess they think it's more fair?? But it's not fair at all because in very few of these situations have both players been equally guilty.

For a team like the flames that likes to roll all 4 lines , it’s hard to get into a groove with 1/3 of the game 4 on 4.

I thought maybe 4 on 4 against DAL would be good to open things up but I agree with the above.

Agree. They also are used to playing a very structured game, which sort of goes out the window in 4 on 4.

I agree. It's not just the Flames games, it's every series, and these playoffs have just not been enjoyable to watch so far

Hopefully it's like early in the season where refs become more strict on some things and then after a week or two go back to normal. I hope later rounds we actually see playoff hockey, because what we've had so far is crap

It was Kylington and Raffl in the second period. Raffl grabbed Kylington's shirtsleeve and was goading him to fight, but Kylington just looked at the refs like "WTF?" Eventually an official stepped in and lightly karate-chopped Raffl's wrist to get him to let go, but they both got roughing penalties.
