Owen Power signs 3-year deal with Sabres, might make his debut on Tuesday
Per NHL website. He will join the team on Saturday, but likely won't play Sunday against the Lightning. GM Kevyn Adams says he is expected to play Tuesday against the Leafs.
Power had 32 points in 33 games for Michigan. Power's Michigan Teammate, Kent Johnson (no.5 in 2021 Draft), signed with CBJ as well.
This nonsense again where they burn a year of his ELC just to sweeten the deal.
I’m not super familiar with the contracts but don’t they have to play more than 9 games in a season to burn a year? Or is that just the guys coming out of juniors?

Apparently he doesn’t need to play at all due to his age (20). The year is still burned.

As a 19 year-old (who will be 19 on September 15), typically, his contract would slide if he didn't play at least 10 games this season. However, he has a November birthday, which means he turns 20 before the end of the calendar year in which he signed the contract, so it does not slide.
If he had been born a month and a half later, the contract would slide.
This will put him in the same situation Gaudreau was in after his first contract, where he isn't bound by the ELC rules, but also isn't a full RFA who can accept offers from other teams. Also, this makes him eligible for his second contract in 2024, while the cap is expected to take a big jump in 2025.
Both of those things combined likely mean that having the contract slide could cost him a decent amount of money on his second contract if he signs long-term.

The main purpose of these deals from the team's perspective is to ensure that the player isn't eligible for an offer sheet.

Yeah, the pooey thing is out him and Dahlin up for renewal at the same time. But if they’re both 9mil+ defenseman at the time than it’s an okay problem to have?

So like, if they are Darnel Nurse good by then?
I am pretty excited to see Owen Power in the NHL though. I think he will be really good. Plus, he has that Clarke Kent thing going on.

There's plenty of D-men I would take before Nurse, at half that cap hit. What a braindead move, signing him to that deal.
Oh I’m sure it isn’t anything that a Spector or Matheson Puff Piece on a “Nurse Bounce Back Season” can’t either insanely explain away or conveniently ignore.
