UPD: Flames recall Ruzicka and Valimaki
Both players listed as scratches for the Heat today after yesterday's 7–1 win over San Jose.
Would expect we'll probably hear more about this soon. Flames down to just 12 healthy forwards if Ritchie is on the shelf for a while.

But I thought Valimaki was “at best, the third option for a D call up”

Is there any word on the nature and extent of Ritchie’s injury, Scorp?

That’s what some people were saying based solely on his effectiveness in Stockton. I think there is more to a call up than just that though. Valimaki has more familiarity with the players and coaches so that counts for something.

Mackey definitely had a better recall case than Valimaki but I'd say Vali was definitely second in line. Kinnvall doesn't seem to be in the org's plans, Poolman isn't great, DeSimone needs more time, and the rest are just AHL vets.

Why do you think that about Kinnvall? He seems to be producing well.
Isn’t DeSimone just an AHL vet also?

Well I was saying that based on his play, he was Stockton's 3rd best D behind MacKey and DeSimone. DeSimone is a RD, and we had an injury on LD(Kylington). DeSimone is also 27, so I doubt they have any plans for him with the big club.

Kinnvall has regularly been a healthy scratch for the Heat recently. #8 on their defensive depth chart.
DeSimone's results of late haven't been that encouraging.

No sense filing paperwork on a non-game day. Expect it to be made official tomorrow.
Valimaki may have one last chance to impress the boss.

Can Philips be called up? Is there some restriction regarding calling up players who wasn't on the NHL roster before the deadline?

Yes he can.
As long as a player was on the team's NHL reserve list at the deadline, he can play in the NHL -- that's why you can sign a drafted college player after the deadline and he can play in the NHL, but if you sign an undrafted college player after the deadline, he can't play in the NHL.
The restriction is on sending a player down from the NHL to the AHL after the deadline. In that case, only players who were in the AHL at the deadline can play in the AHL after the deadline (the one exception being an injured player who goes down for a conditioning stint, but is still considered to be on the NHL roster for cap purposes).

Thanks. I knew there was some sort of restriction but wasn't quite clear.

Valimaki may have been scratched for another reason and may not be getting called up. I guess we'll find out soon enough.

It's a little disappointing to me that Ruzicka was called up over Phillips. They have Lindholm, Backlund, Jarnkrok, Carpenter, and Dube that can play C and they already made a move because they didn't think Ruzicka was ready to take a role.
Ritchie is an RW that went down and they could have given Phillips a shot while the team could use an offensive boost and the team is pretty comfortable in the race. Might have been good for prospects to see that if you play well all season in the A, you'll get a look in the show.
