Kings 3 Flames 2 (SO)
Kings 3 Flames 2 (SO)
- Flames ugly in this one
- Too many turnovers, and too much reliance on Markstrom.
- Better third got them a point.

I had zero issue with the call in OT. We would be livid if the roles were reversed and it went uncalled. Hang onto your stick Lindholm.
You pointing out that Flames are closer in points to missing the playoffs than winning the Conference is a good dose of humility really. Flames are not some NHL superpower, they still need to outwork opponents and play with the lead more often than not.

Not sure anyone has or is calling them a superpower.
They are in the West which has had some sputtering teams this year and with that have a decent path to the western conference final.
But lots can happen (good and bad) on that road.
They've just hit a rut, all the top teams have gone through them.
Still say the stick was in Linholm's hands.

I keep going back to the lack of secondary scoring. Not getting enough offensively out of Coleman, Mangiapane, Backlund, etc. Even Toffoli has cooled off.

I like what jarnkrok brings to the table, but he might not be the ideal guy to center that scoring line.

With Dube and Coleman?
That's not really a scoring line.

Hopefully its not a case of this same old core having the same old mental issues.
When the games ramp up and have more meaning the Flames seem to not be able to keep up.
No next level of compete or skill to turn to when games matter more.

Taking a while to get to 5000

I liked the idea Pinder had this morning. A super checking line of Coleman-Backlund-Jarnkrok and maybe Dube inbetween Mangiapane & Toffoli

Hand. Don't think I've seen a stick knocked from a player's hand called a penalty in the NHL before. But grabbing an opponent's stick with both of your hands should be a penalty every time.
Wasn't suggesting you were calling them a superpower but it is worth observing that in terms of results, they are very close to a large pack of teams. I'm not complaining, I'll happily take their spot in the standings.

I've definitely seen stick lift penalties when the stick flies. No debate on Lindholm's holding at all.
As I said in other topic I don't want the stick lift called, but when it gets in the hands it's usually called ... I'd prefer players hold on to their sticks.
The Kings and Oilers are .600 teams, if Calgary sags they could close the gap, but that would take a pretty good sag - especially LA as they've played three more games.
Edmonton and LA at a .650 clip would finish at 99 points, the Flames would need 10 points in 15 games to get to the same point or a 5-10-0 record. That's not close at all.

IMO any teams that finish within 6 or so points of each other are pretty close over an 82 game season.
If the Flames were to play say Nashville in the first round, I'd consider that close to a dead heat.

Ah, I missed last night's game and thought that it was Toffoli and not Coleman. That's what I get for making a comment on the fly. Maybe the issue is three checking lines?

Well we know Sutter won't claim to be the favorite.
At current paces the Flames are a 109 point team the Predators 100. Both good hockey clubs.
But personally I put the 95-100 point teams in that 3rd in the division or wild car area, and the 105+ teams division winners.
Those nine points are nine games over .500 more in modern NHL points.
