From the Vatrano thread.

Funny day. Multiple people have predicted some natural outcomes.

Glad we weren't in on Chariot, and glad we aren't in on Giordano.
More than happy to pick up a depth guy on the cheap, though

Big haul for the Habs. Habs also retain 50%
Canadiens Montréal
@CanadiensMTL
The Canadiens have traded defenseman Ben Chiarot to the Florida Panthers in exchange for Tyler Smilanic, a 1st-round pick in 2023, and a 4th-round pick in 2022.

Great return for Montreal ... don't get it for FLA.

This makes the toffoli trade look better. Our first and a prospect gets 2.5 years of toffoli. Florida trades something similar for half a year with chariot.

Don't like the 1st round pick, but you have to go for it if you're the Panthers. Chiarot will provide the one element they don't have enough of, big tough defensemen who can do a little of everything.
Here's hoping he's a good fit on a roster that's mostly speed and skill.

Where does he fit on the depth chart? 2nd, or 3rd pairing?

2nd pairing with Forsling. Gudas is too high on the second pair and is much better suited to third pair with Montour. Each pair has a skill guy and a physical guy. Should work out okay.
