Well, another name off the trade bait list, though Dallas probably end up not being sellers since are in the thick of the wild card race.
Pavelski has had a great season with Dallas.

Mixed feelings on this one cause there's a decent chance we get Dallas in Round 1 and Pavelski is a noted Flames-killer. But on the other hand, good to know he won't be traded to another contender to strengthen their chances.

Good, now keep on rolling. Keep the Oil out of the wildcard and have a gruelling 7 game first round death match with Colorado where both teams come out destroyed.

Hypothetical question:

Suppose a player on an expiring contract without any NMC, signs a 1 year contract with a full NMC, could that player still be traded prior to the trade deadline before his trade protection kicks in?

Yes, they can be traded any time prior to the clause kicking in.

This happened to Jeff Carter I do believe.

The PA and NHL actually amended the CBA after the Carter and Richards trades. Players were afraid of this scenario.

When a player signs a contract extension with a NTC/NMC, the NTC/NMC can start immediately when the extension is signed if both the team and player agree to it. In practice, if a player has the leverage to negotiate a NTC/NMC in their extension they have leverage to start the NTC/NMC immediately.

It was first applied to the Getzlaf and Perry contracts in Anaheim IIRC.

If anyone wants to look it up it is CBA section 11.8 b for the precise language.

That’s a heck of a deal for a heck of a player. I think he and Jason Robertson have actually supplanted Benn and Seguin from a leadership standpoint. The Sharks seem to miss Pavelski too from the looks of it.
