That’s 30.9% of elite #1 centre salary.
No thanks!

I’ve heard on this site it wasn’t an option to match. They would have had to offer more. I don’t know how much.

On November 18, 2019, Hathaway was given a match penalty and was ejected from a game against the Anaheim Ducks when he intentionally spat on skater Erik Gudbranson during a fight.[28] Following the game ejection, the NHL suspended Hathaway for three games without pay, and announced that he would forfeit $24,193 to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund as part of his punishment.[29] The Ducks' reaction to the spitting incident was vitriolic, with Gudbranson saying, "It's something you just don't do in our game, and he did it". Teammate Derek Grant added, "At the end of the day, it's probably the least respectful thing you can ever do to somebody."[30]

If we had offered him the same deal before he hit UFA, I suspect he would have signed.
And yes, we definitely should have signed him. He has a non-stop motor.

What I heard was - he was set on going east. Dunno if it’s true.

Liked Garnet a lot actually. That Derek Ryan, Mangiapane and Hathaway line was sensational down the stretch. I remember them picking up a lot of the slack once the top line went cold. $1.5M would've been a bargain for Hathaway. But big mistakes were made with the Brouwer and Neal contracts that pretty much prevented the Flames from giving Hathaway this kind of a raise. Is what it is I suppose, looks like he's doing well with the Caps, even has 10 goals already this season.

I think it is impressive what he has done since his departure, but at the time it was a huge risk. He had had one strong year, largely driven by Mangiapane and Ryan as his linemates, with Mangiapane destined to move up the lineup and Ryan aging out. Hindsight is 20/20, but at the time Hathaway had potential to be another Bouma type future buyout. 2017-18 Hathaway, for instance, is barely better than Brett Ritchie

Treliving had been burned by re-signing past depth players like Jooris and Bouma so I have no issue with him learning from past mistakes and being cautious with Hathaway. Signing depth players to 4 year deals is usually bad business. It worked out maybe in the case of the Capitals but I consider that the exception to the norm.

He’s a great player, but somewhat of a Lance Bouma type. I don’t suspect he will have a long career, although I do hope he does and wish him all the best.
Edit: GrantedEV and I are on the same page

Depth player who beat the odds and stayed healthy and productive. Most don’t. Good for him, but hindsight is 20/20.

I totally get not wanting to sign this type of player to a four deal.
Now what would be awesome is to bring a player up from Stockton who has similar speed, energy and jam to take a regular shift on the 4th line and kill some penalties. Basically a better version of Ritchie. I like Ruzicka but that is not really his game.

Hathaway was a great signing out of college, but it is tough to know what to expect long term from a bottom six player. I don’t know if the flames even considered giving him a 4 year contract.
Good job by the caps scooping him up.

I'm still pretty sour on him for ruining Iggy's jersey retirement game with a boneheaded major.
