I feel old. I wanted to brighten my morning a bit while the ongoing assault of Ukraine continues, and I heard on the radio it was the 20 year anniversary or close to, of our gold medal win in Salt Lake. Bob Coles ####ing classic "Hello Canada" is the most iconic opening to a hockey game I still remember today. Younger people won't realize how hungry we were as a nation for a gold in hockey after the Nagano disaster.
My favourite parts of the game were Joe Sakics goal and call by Cole, and the image of Gretzky and the staff hugging and jumping when we iced. "Surely that will do it".
I still get goosebumps.
What's your memories of 02?

At the time it was without question the most important hockey game I ever watched. Maybe still is, even accounting for 04 flames and 2010 gold medal game.
I was too young for anything in the 80s to mean all that much.

I was at that game. It was a cool experience to see a game like that in such a tiny arena. I met all sorts of Canadian celebrities that meant absolutely nothing to my American gf, because everyone sat together in the single bowl. Walter Gretzky was sitting in row below us and got to talk to him for a bit.

I remember Joe Sakic being an absolute beast all game on that line with Iggy and Gagne. In a game that featured some of the greatest hockey players of all time on the ice in their prime...he was the most dominant player on the ice all game.
Honestly he's probably still underrated as a player even though he's in the HHoF.
Guy was still a PPG player until pretty much the day he retired in his late 30s.

Yup...the whole shredding of the flag and all that stuff.
There have been lots of poorly officiated international games through the decades....that one was, by far, the absolute worst. It was amateur hour and could not have been more obvious as to what was happening. Still not sure how the ladies pulled that one out, other than Hayley refusing to let her team go down with the corruption.

We were playing hockey and tied 2-2 after a period and a half. Both teams decided to call it a tie so everyone could go home and watch the game. Caught the 3rd. Awesome.
i remember stopping at superstore to grab some 'party food' on my way to a buddy's house and it was a ghost town in there. the chip selection was very limited.
i also remember driving home right after the game and the streets were eerily quiet - almost no cars on the roads - but people were going out to their vehicles and honking their horns in celebration

IMO this is the greatest hockey team ever assembled. They had Lemieux, Sakic, Iginla, Yzerman, Kariya, Shanahan, Brodeur. 13 players from that team are currently in the Hall of Fame.
Iginla never would have been the Hall of Fame player without these games. He was a late camp invite and said after attending training camp he realized he could play with the very best in the world. The rest is history.
That play by Lemiuex to fake a shot and allow the puck through to Kariya stands out as one of the highest hockey IQ plays I have ever seen. He was my favourite player growing up and that play absolutely blew my mind.

Damn, we sure had some beef and firepower on the blue line.
"Iginla. What a game my son. What a game."
I was in Jackson hole Wyoming, at my in-laws wedding. There were 30 people in our hotel room watching the game, a fairly even mix of Canadians and Americans. It was pandamonium. Still one of my favorite memories. So proud to be Canadian.

I wished so bad that Bob Cole would call the Flames winning the Cup with an old ass Iginla and he repeats what he said for Lanny in 89, " You've done it Iggy. You've done it!"
