Default TSN Power Rankings (and a bonus tweet from Kim Kardashian)

I know, I know, power rankings usually suck when they're opinion-based, but TSN seems to have adopted a more stats-based approach?

Regardless, they have some nice things to say!

Quote:
The Calgary Flames are on fire, pun intended. They have won 10 games in a row and are building a comfortable lead atop the Pacific Division. The Flames might only be eighth in points percentage, but the only team we are putting ahead of Calgary in our rankings right now is Florida.

Former Panther Jacob Markstrom is running laps around everyone in the shutout department with eight, twice as many as any other goaltender. Offensively, the line of Johnny Gaudreau, Elias Lindholm, and Matthew Tkachuk has been the best in the league. Calgary has scored 49 even-strength goals when those three players share the ice, easily the most of any three-man unit, as no one else has more than 35.

Calgary fully deserves to be the top-ranked Canadian team and they are making a case to be the top-ranked team overall.

Also, here's a tweet from Kim Kardashian that I'm only seeing now for some reason:

Never cared about the Kardashians before, but that little one might just change that!

Maybe in 12 years she's performing the new iteration of "in da dome" about a Tig Iginla-led Flames team.

Can you elaborate? I would love to hear the story about how a Flames jersey end up on one of her kids although it's likely something as simple as "It's a cute hockey jersey.".

My girlfriend told me the kids name is Chicago so the C is probably correlated to the first letter of her name

seems like a pretty difficult way for someone in LA (worth 9 digits) to get a shirt with a C on it

So she named her kid Chicago? I knew there was a reason I have never seen that show.

I won't argue that ranking. Florida/Tampa/Carolina/Avs are monsters this year, so to be in the same top 5 as them (and belong) is good enough for me.

For that kind of money, I'd change my name to ‘Edmonton Oilers’.

still blow my mind that the Flames are "only" the 8th best team in the league now in terms of standings. There's some ridiculously good teams this year.

May be true, but I think the bottom half of the eastern conference (precisely) being non-competitive/a step behind this season is playing into those point and win totals.

A lot of eastern teams were out of the race as early as December.

Might be why TSN have the Flames ranked 2nd.

West is more competitive down the stretch with less disparity in the race and they're cleaning up night after night.

I suppose having the top line and being top 10 in nearly every category helps too.

The numbers don't lie, the Flames have been playing great.

Their record is really skewed by that one slump which was exacerbated by Covid. Every team slumps of course, but the Flames hit an 18-day Covid break, right in the middle of a slump. Then had to play some games while recovering, which extended the slump. Here is how the season breaks down:

Oct 16 - Dec 4: 24G, 15-4-5, 35 Pts, T-3rd overall

Dec 4 - Jan 14: 10G, 2-7-1, 5 Pts, 31st overall (only MTL was worse)

Jan 14 - Feb 21: 15G, 13-2-0, 26 Pts, 1st overall

Exc those 10 games: 39G, 28-6-5, 61 Pts, .782

That slump clouds (somewhat) just how good they have been otherwise.

Yes, every team slumps, and every team's record looks better when you remove the slump, just posting it to show just how significant that one slump was, and how dominant they have been otherwise.

Doesn't matter why she's wearing it, it helps the brand, the team, the franchise, and the fandom to have someone that famous wearing our crest.

Though, for the record, this looks like the same jersey Kanye was seen wearing a year or two ago.

What’s more alarming is that the non flames kid is clearly photoshopped into both pictures and that’s super weird.

yeah I think top 3 is a fair assessment too. You can take pretty much every relevant advanced stat and it'll tell you they're an elite team. xG, Corsi, Scoring Chances, High Danger Chances ... they are a top 3 team across the board.

which amazes me even more when I look at the standings. They are on a pace for 110 points, and still, there's 8 teams with a better pace. I get that there's a number of really bad teams in the East which will skew the picture a little bit, but there's also teams like Minnesota which are doing incredibly well this year. I can't remember the disparity between good and bad teams ever being that huge in the cap era, it just feels crazy this year.

I was noting in the game thread last night that the point totals of top teams this year are pacing out to be pretty high. We will see if that holds up or if some of these 110 point teams end up closer to 100. The top 9 point percentage teams are all pacing to 110 points, and 8 of them to 50 wins. I wouldn't think that will be the final result, but it could be. The NHL Middle class of 90-99 point teams has shrunk. Only Edmonton, Los Angeles, Nashville, and Dallas are projecting to end up in that area this season. Typically this is a corhort where you find a lot more teams. In the 2019-2020 season there were 13 teams projecting to finish in this range.

The one place where the Flames play appears to have yield less efficient results vs the rest of the league does look to be in their point total. They're in the mix with Minnesota, and St.Louis in the Conference when some other numbers suggest they should be closer to Colorado, Florida, Carolina, and Tampa Bay.
