Flames Johnny Gaudreau for the Hart

There's likely no beating Ovechkin for the Hart this year, but I think Johnny Gaudreau has played well enough to merit legitimate consideration for the Hart Trophy.

I wrote more about it today at FlamesNation:

https://twitter.com/user/status/1486777539859128324

https://flamesnation.ca/2022/01/27/j...t-trophy-2022/

"Johnny Gaudreau is, without question, the Flames’ most valuable player. With the way he’s played this year, he should be firmly in contention with Huberdeau and Ovechkin (and well clear of the lottery-bound Edmonton duo) in the race for the Hart."

I particularly enjoyed typing out the phrase "lottery-bound Edmonton duo."

What do you think? Gaudreau for Hart?

I know it’s easy clicks and good fun but you have the power to start making Calgary media stop using the grease as a benchmark when they’re not a benchmark. I think that attitude is a big reason why the Flames have been so average for such a long time, “At least we’re better than Edmonton”.

Great article even with that in it. Didn’t know that the OISV% was that high, Gaudreau will probably start racking up some minuses and everyone will get mad but yeah that’s kind of unsustainable. Hopefully he can continue being on fire, and hopefully this is the level he can play at for at least a couple years more in Calgary.

There's still half a season to be played out. I wished he played his heart out every year, not just his contract year where's he's gonna go free-agent after the season. If you consider him, might as well consider Tkachuk as well.

I'd rather he win the Conn Smythe.

Well I mean Draisaitl and McDavid have always been Hart contenders. I think it would've been stranger to omit any mention of them.

You are not wrong there, I’m just grumpy and hate seeing any mention of them.

I am sorry do you really think Flames Ownership, Management, Coaches & Players have used the Oilers as their measure of success?

The fans and media do. And when those are the expectations from the only two groups you really have to keep happy, that’s what the management will come to believe.

Totally fair to discuss the Oiler twins in this context.

If you include them, Johnny probably falls out of the top-5.

If you don't, then Johnny is only behind Ovechkin, Huberdeau for forwards, but I gotta think writers are talking about Fox & Makar for Hart also.

I think you are wrong.

I do not think the Flames Management and Ownership use fans & media as a measuring stick of any success.

I really don't think 97/29 will get much Hart consideration if they don't make the playoffs. They're not even running away with the scoring race.

So then why follow along with the rest of the media, perpetuating their presence in the discussion?

Don't be like the rest of the media - talk about the players you think deserve to be talked about, like Huberdeau. And Gaudreau.

Under the definition it’s Gaudreau. Huberdeau has been having a fantastic year, but he’s got Barkov on his team. IMO there’s a much bigger gap between Johnny and the next most important guy, whoever you might think that is.

That said, if Ovie gets the record, he wins, definition notwithstanding.

And the media will never let McDavid not be in the running IMO.

No way 13 even gets considered. The Canadian media will not consider anyone but Conner, Leon or Auston, no matter what Johnny does.

That's kind of what I thought he did.
From the article:

Johnny Gaudreau is, without question, the Flames’ most valuable player. With the way he’s played this year, he should be firmly in contention with Huberdeau and Ovechkin (and well clear of the lottery-bound Edmonton duo) in the race for the Hart. No member of the Flames has ever captured that trophy*.

*Asterisk Added: We all know Jarome won it, really, in 2002...
