Default Flames 4 Stars 3

Flames 4 Stars 3

- Flames score three goals in the last 5.5 minutes to erase a 1-3 deficit.
- Fourth line with Ruzicka and Lucic make a difference
- Dan Vladar picks up the win with a surprise goalie change for the third.

Good analysis. I agree on the Kylington take, high event player. But the good outweighs the bad and he’s one of three players on the team that can make something out of nothing. The other two will be making $9 mil+ next season.

No, but did anyone actually think that was a serious response from Sutter?

Happy to see Ruzicka finding his footing in the NHL. That pass on the first goal showed good composure. His 6’4 frame helped too

His skating also looks better than what some people were saying.

Maybe another example of how if you want a player to develop NHL skills, you need to play them in the NHL.

I’m liking what I’m seeing from Ruzicka as a big bodied offensively talented C.

Kylington is a player I can’t help but root for as he makes plays that pretty much only the top line forwards could rival. He skates so well, can make skilled plays to beat defenders and can stick handle with the best of them.

I really hope they start putting him in better offensive situations. In a way I get why Hanifin quarterbacks PP2 but the other side of me wishes it was Kylington with 4 forwards. I know the 4 forward thing seems to mostly be exclusive to teams PP1 but I want to see Kylington handling the puck up the ice in those situations.

Great finish to a chippy affair though!

I think Sutter put Ritchie on the 3rd line as a placeholder for whoever we acquire. This way the other lines build chemistry and then once we get that middle 6 winger we end up with 4 strong lines.

Chess not checkers.

Almost as important ... he's using his size better now. Sealing players off, holding the puck inside his frame, getting in the way of players.

School 1. I assume Markstrom will get the start tonight seeing it's the last game before the break. Darryl is just one of those coaches that believes he has to play his top goaltender as many games as possible and doesn't feel backup goaltender seasoning is part of the head coach job description. Regardless of his motivations, the Vladar move paid off as the team had a much better 3rd period.

He was on the “right side of the puck” a lot yesterday.

Exactly.

Such a simple thing, but noticeable difference.

And when you're on the right side of the puck with a 6'4" frame opponents tend to lose battles.

Early results are pretty positive. As the season goes along, if Ruzicka can establish himself as a net positive contributer on the 4th line, that is a huge boon for the club and for the teams drafting and development.

Not unlike Mangiapane's coming out party on the 4th line with Derek Ryan a few years ago.

the more I think about it I suspect you are correct, factoring in the long break upcoming hard to imagine it isn't Markstrom

looking at February I'd say maybe Vladar plays one of Vegas/Toronto and probably plays one of CBJ/Ana (*assuming something unusual doesn't happen one way or another)

It’s what’s going wrong for Dube a fair bit. Lots of effort but wrong side of the puck. And he’s not got the size to compensate.

Johnny has improved this game a lot.

Very much agree, a real comfortable "pro" move, and hopefully more to come.

And for a guy like Sutter crucial.

I think when Ruzicka completely lost his check in the corner in Carolina it was a given that he was back to the drawing board for some defensive zone 101 from Sutter.

Can't blame him when you see the difference now.
