How can the Flames have 3 HDSCs?
Gaudreau had one on his breakaway, another on his penalty shot, and another on his goal. That's 3 right there

Great takes all around. I obviously love the finish but I can’t shake from my mind how frustrating it was to watch that game!

Pretty much an indication of how tired the team is/was.
They played a lot of hockey the last 8 days with 5 games and a healthy amount of travel mixed in.
Mentally they were pretty sharp but physically you could tell they were struggling at times.
Rest as much as they can today and hope its enough to recharge the batteries for another 2 game b2b roadie starting Tuesday.

Frustrating game to be sure but an important ugly win. Good teams need to win these types of games. I am settling in nicely in terms of understanding this team and my expectations. I think they are a .600 team, outside of the league's elite but dangerous to play every night and a team no one is going to want to play in the playoffs. Moreover, they work hard and are a cheerable bunch for a change, and I have enjoyed the hell out of this season so far even if every game's not a Rembrandt.

Three five on five.
Six in the game.
A penalty shot wouldn't count as it's not five on five or any other category.

I think they were attempting to play low event hockey as alluded to in the game take. I haven't watched a lot of Canucks since Boudreau took over but it's clear he's reining them in to decrease the amount of blue chip scoring chances they give up which was a major issue under Green. Last night it appeared they just couldn't match the Flames energy or they simply aren't as good at playing this sort of game as the Flames are right now.

Well the Flames have completely shut down many opponents of late, so I'd give the Flames some credit.

Full credit to the Flames for the defensive side of the game. As frustrating a game as it was to watch, they did their job in the d zone. I’m really liking Zadorov. Someone said in the GT that he’s like a fullback out there and I think that’s pretty dead-on. He had a few great rushes into the Canucks zone. I hope Monahan can start potting some goals, I feel like he’s been pressing and is close. Glad we could pull out the win. The panel continues to reach new levels of unbearable. Thanks for the Game Takes, Bingo!

The Canucks PP was rather laughable. Although Flames didn’t score at least they didn’t pass it out of the zone. Overall Flames did a great job of just suffocating them throughout the game.
I didn’t really notice it live but that was a bad penalty miss on the GWG. Miller certainly gave up but Flames extremely lucky there.
Hopefully team goes on a little run, standings are still too close for my liking.

It seems to all support your start of the year concerns, of their lack of depth to convert on chances.

I have been much more impressed by Zadorov the past couple months, but the one thing that frustrates me about him still is his refusal to pass the puck on the rush. It seems like whenever he carries it into the zone he is determined to shoot it no matter what.

Someone said it in the game thread and it is the same way I saw it: the officials let a clear interference penalty go in the last five mins of regulation that would have put the Canucks on the PK yet again. It seemed like game-management to me, and then the missed interference in OT looked more like a "make-up miss," and an attempt to ensure that the teams finished the night on even-footing.
All in all, the Flames earned that win.

The rush where Tkachuk was interfered with? Yeah that should have been a penalty but he wasn't carrying the puck at that point and I can live with that. There was no scoring threat IMO.
Miller had the puck, the hook leads to a turnover and odd man rush.
Earned, not earned, i don't know how to measure that. Flames don't have that chance in OT if the officials enforce the rules. If the tables were turned, that is the only thing we'd be talking about.
But the Flames don't have to apologize for it. Hockey games are full of breaks and bounces and you need to take advantage. They did.

It felt like a lot of shots went straight into the goalie’s stomach. At the time I couldn’t tell if that is a sign of a lack of focus or good positioning by Demko. With a few more shots into the pads or places other than the jersey logo might give some rebounds and more HDSC. Felt like Vancouver spent most of the penalty kill giving up the entry and outside of the zone to protect the middle hoping Demko gets the outside shots and Calgary didn’t really seem to try to get anything in the middle. It was all to the point for a short or a cross ice pass for a one timer. That can work against teams that are sitting in the outside but I’m not sure it’s a sustainable strategy if Calgary gets more aggressive with seeking space in the middle and forces them to open up.
