Is enough being done to protect referees? I'm not involved in minor hockey at all (yet) so I'm wondering if things have changed since then.

In Japan (as I understand it) referees and umpires are treated with the greatest respect, and no fan or athlete would ever think of criticizing them.

Sorry no. Officials in Japan are abused endlessly. Shown absolutely no respect and in every sport except the traditional ones. It doesn't help that they suck too.

Many time I have seen baseball players get away with things that would have them tossed from the field in NA.
