New Zealand plans to make it illegal for kids to buy cigarettes — for life
Quote:
New Zealand plans to ban young people from ever buying cigarettes in their lifetime in one of the world's toughest crackdowns on the tobacco industry, arguing that other efforts to extinguish smoking were taking too long.
People aged 14 and under in 2027 will never be allowed to purchase cigarettes in the Pacific country of five million, part of proposals unveiled on Thursday that will also curb the number of retailers authorized to sell tobacco and cut nicotine levels in all products.
The ban will remain in place for the rest of the person's life. That means a person aged 60 in 2073 will be banned from buying cigarettes, while a person aged 61 would be allowed to do so.
I think this is a great plan. It's a few years off to allow businesses to adjust, the government to ween themselves off the tax revenue and sets their country up for long term health benefits.

This is a great move; a plan to finally stamp it out in a planned approach.
The government of New Zealand is really making some good moves in recent years. Jacinda Ardern is a very effective PM and parliament have been effective decision makers. Arguably one of the most well-run (and beautiful) countries on Earth.

Black market cig industry about to get very lucrative in NZ.
How many people, who have never had cigarettes, go to the black market for their first pack? There are many better things on the market to try before cigarettes.
You'd think if they don't start smoking, they're less likely to seek it out on the black market.

Most smokers had their first smoke before they were old enough to legally buy a pack of cigarettes.
Strange rule. Just make buying cigarettes illegal completely instead.
When these kids are adults and can't buy cigarettes, but an adult a year older can, that's just dumb.
So, why don't they just outright make cigarettes illegal over the next couple of decades? Seems overly complicated trying to stamp out cigarettes. Guess the government still wants that sweet sweet tax revenues.
I still remember back in the 80's living in smalltown Redcliff. They used to have a convenience store that had an arcade in the back. Whenever I went to the arcade, my dad would get me to help pick up a pack of cigarettes for him after I'm done. Still pretty crazy back then they'd sell cigarettes to an 8 year old lol. But then, I guess you don't really see 8 year olds being allowed to just wander around town by themselves anymore either.

In grades 4-8 (early to late 80's) I had a buddy who's mom would write him a note to get darts for her.
It was a great avenue of underaged smoking.

Well, probably, yeah.
Not to mention, New Zealanders travel. They can get cigarettes basically anywhere if they want them.
That being said, this is an interesting idea and at the very least it will likely curb consumption from casual smokers.
So I can see the benefit here, its not going to be perfect, diehards and the determined will find ways of smoking if its that important to them but overall by making it more difficult and phasing in more restrictions over time this will reduce smoking.
As long-term thing this legislation will more or less achieve its objectives.
I never realized that smoking was such a hot-button topic in New Zealand or such a big problem to warrant something like this.

great news. Now will they do the same for alchohol? what about fast food? How about limiting cars to no faster than the maximum speed limit inside of the NZ (maybe 100 kph)? How about a mandatory exercise regime?
seems like a good idea on the surface, but it also takes rights away and i find that a little uncomfortable

Well, they've taken our right to snort coke and inject heroin, too, so it's not like there isn't precedent.
