Which was the best Flames roster of all time?
With this whole Eichel debacle, I started thinking about when I felt the Flames had the best roster of all time that didn't win a cup.
Had we landed Eichel, I feel our current roster could have been up there.
I'd be interested to see what peoples opinion would be. As long time fans have expressed, we've always been missing certain key pieces, like an elite dman, elite center, elite left/right winger, elite goalie.
06/07 stands out to me but recently 18/19 was a pretty good team.
Thoughts?

88-89
Incredible centre depth, excellent two way forwards, some real snipers, a stellar D corps and a hot goalie. And veteran leadership.
8 20 goal scorers, plus Fleury with 14 in only 36 games. 2 50 goal men. 4 players at PPG, plus Macinnis was close.
Ooops, I see “that didn’t win a cup” now. But the same roster a year later was almost identical, so 89-90. Subtract Loob but add Makarov. And Ranheim all year.

'88-89, nothing comes remotely close. That was one of the best teams ever iced in the history of the game. It was sad it was so fleeting. That could have been a dynasty if managed right.

That didn't win a cup?
89/90. The year after they won the cup.

Also the most disappointing team ever. IMO that team should have just rolled everyone.
Damn you Krushelnyski. Damn you Vernon’s stubby little arms.

There was something just off about that year's roster. They lost some very important glue guys, not only McDonald, but Peplinski and Loob, and replaced them with highly skilled passengers.
I'd say both the 87-88 President's Trophy team and the '90-91 team with 50-goal Fleury were better teams. The '87-88 team had more talent, and the '90-91 team, while maybe slightly less talented, was slotted better and worked better together.

yeah the 87-88 team was both highly similar, yet distinct from the cup team the year later. the offence on 87-88 was ridiculous. to the best of my knowledge to this day the highest scoring team in league history that didn't have either Gretzky or Orr on it. Yet two trades 6 months apart with St. Louis shipped out Hull and Bullard and brought back Gilmour, Ramage, Wamsley and Mark Hunter- offence went down but the team that was resulted was far more complete

1989-90 - 117 points and the only team to finish the year over .700 in winning percentage.
I’m not sure they were “off”. They just ran into a determined Kings team that had Gretzky.

Loob really screwed our dynasty. Imagine if we had both him and Makarov that next year?
