At least 146 killed during incident at Halloween festivities in Seoul
At least 146 people are now reported to have been killed during an incident at Halloween festivities in Seoul’s Itaewon neighborhood Saturday night, according to Choi Seong-bum, chief of the Yongsan-gu Fire Department.
At least 150 others were also reported injured, the chief added.
The cause of the deaths has not been confirmed, but the fire chief said many people fell during the Halloween festivities, resulting in casualties. The chief said they received reports of people “buried” in crowds starting around 10:24 p.m. local time Saturday night.
this has happened in other things like overpacked concerts...typically though, its a result of some kind of panic - like the teargas incident at a soccer stadium recently...
not sure what caused the rush in this case...but a national tragedy for South Korea

The one article I read said that there was a rumour of a celebrity appearing at a near by bar and everyone started rushing through alleys and streets trying to get over there.

That wouldn't make it any less sad or tragic, but it would make it really stupid if this ends up being true.

So when I was in my teens I was at Slushcup @ Millennium Park.
Swollen Members on stage, huge pit of people pushing and I was caught in the middle with some friends.
Huge part ended up collapsing, unfortunately I was stuck and slowly the pile was getting bigger and bigger. I was near the bottom with about half a dozen people stacked on top of me and I couldn't move an inch, couldn't breathe (well) and couldn't scream.
Few minutes go by and a buddy was able to pull me out enough to catch my breath, and eventually got me out.
Fraction of what these people experienced, but that was enough for me to never venture into a huge crowd that packed together with people, its awful.
There is a post on Reddit that shows the severity of the crowd (I do not know whether this was before or after). IIRC this is close to the location of the main problem, but I haven't been to Itaewon much since pre-Covid days. I quit going there for Halloween many, many years ago because it was too busy. Nothing like this tho.

Sounds like you were in bad need of “Fuel Injected”

Back in 2015 we had something similar happen in Shanghai on NYE when the crowd gathered to watch the fireworks in a very popular area suddenly panicked and around 30-40 people got killed with many others injured. I remember the rush in the crowd being caused by people thinking large amounts of cash was getting thrown down to the crowd from a rooftop party or something, but I don't remember if that was ever confirmed or not. Either way, an awful way for a lot of young people to lose their lives. I didn't know anyone directly affected by that event, and really hoping my friends in Seoul are all good and haven't lost anyone they know in this.

"In an interview with news channel YTN, Hwang Min-hyeok, a visitor to Itaewon, said it was shocking to see rows of bodies near the hotel. He said emergency workers were initially overwhelmed, leaving pedestrians struggling to administer CPR to the injured lying on the streets. People wailed beside the bodies of their friends, he said." https://www.cbc.ca/news/world/south-...urge-1.6634610
So sad, especially at an outdoor neighborhood where people really wouldn't be thinking about something like this potentially happening.
Not even a concert or event or anything.
After the 2010 Golden goal, we ventured out to Granville Street and the crowds moved towards the intersection of Granville & Robson.
As we got towards that intersection crowds from all four directions were all coming there converging inward.
I got pushed up against a storefront wall and felt the weight of the crowd completely dictating my movement and it was a scary feeling I hadn't experienced and still remember.
Thankfully I was able to escape the convergence and exit that intersection but for a brief moment I felt that sense of how these things happen.
Have been conscious of this and nervous in tight crowds ever since.
Found out a friend of ours was there last night and fortunate not to get caught in the mess.
She did say it was caused by the mention of a celebrity at one of the bars. So sad, but celebrity, especially k-pop style, is massive there.
