Flames general Brad Treliving knew the risk.

If he used Calgary’s sixth-round pick (No. 166 overall) in 2015 on someone other than Andrew Mangiapane, a favourite of scout Terry Doran, well…

“I would have got punched,” Treliving said with a laugh on a call with The Athletic.

“(Our scouts) dug in,” Treliving said. “They knew all of the DNA of this kid about how hard he pushes himself, and just the talent. He’s got high-end talent and he’s got a big-time engine that’s going to drive him. The only thing he didn’t do is that the tape measure didn’t stretch out.”

Mangiapane still remembers standing in the parking lot of the Sadlon Arena in Barrie watching his mom, Patricia, arguing with Hawerchuk. She wanted assurance that the opportunity was real.

“My mom was arguing with Dale, basically saying, ‘Are you just taking him to take away his rights from the NCAA?’” Mangiapane said with a laugh. “And he is going, ‘No, no, listen, lady, I like your son, I like how he plays, he’s a good hockey player.’ But it took a little bit of convincing.”

“They didn’t even know what was going on,” Miller added, recalling the parking lot conversation. “They were really nervous because he’s a kid that could have got a full-ride scholarship, no problem. They’re great people, they’re so proud of their boy. But they were adamant, and they wanted to know we were looking after him.”

The Athletic does sound like great content but when people post articles from it I do feel like discussion is somewhat muted as only a select audience has a subscription. Understand the situation but its kinda annoying.

Typically, the answer is "its not expensive, just get the subscription".

However, I think actual discussion (with full article) can lead to new folks subscribing who haven't already to read other content. How else are they supposed to expand their audience? I am not sure tidbits of an article entices much.

Mangi reminds me a bit of Fleury, except without the ego and the mouth. Got the skills, plays big, and not afraid to go into the tough areas. Yeah, it's too bad the tape measure came out short but it really doesn't matter now that's he's proven it's not his handicap. Guess he's the bread of this team - who's the butter?

I think(/hope) you're missing the target of keenan87's criticism. TheAthletic needs some degree of free access in order to entice people to subscribe. I'm personally not a fan of blanket "five free articles a month" as a traditional newspaper like WSJ might limit you to, nor am I fan of one-time free trials but what I would propose is perhaps "one free article per author (bi-?)monthly". This would account for the dynamic nature of their writer roster.

Everyone is in a different economic state, but the value for money is tremendous.

Pay for the content so we all don't lose it.

And the idea that posting full articles would somehow further entice people to pay for a subscription is completely backwards.

I don't have an Athletic subscription. I do sometimes wish I did, and have been tempted. If there were complete articles posted here, or if I could read a few a month, that desire would evaporate completely.

I used to subscribe to the New Yorker. Now I carefully choose which free articles I want to read every month and convince myself that's enough. If they didn't have free articles, I would probably subscribe again.
