Ridiculous contract. Sorry, but he isn't worth that.

Wow. When Friedman mentioned this a couple of days back and Cassie Campbell asked if it was double digits, I was sure she was wayyyyy off her estimation.
This is a rich contract

Who else was going to give him 76 m ??? Dumb contact by the bruins. Should have been able to get a much lower aav for the 8th year.

Big dollars but he is one of the best shutdown defensemen in the league and has enough offence to be a top pair guy.
Kind of annoying that the Bruins had Chara patrolling the blueline for a decade and they drafted and developed an immediate replacement the moment he was gone.

McAvoy is one of the very best defencemen in the league. He is absolutely worth this.
Locked up until he is 31? This will look very good.

11.52% of the salary cap (on a projected 82.5M cap), and all of his prime years. He's a #1 defenceman, and so far the best defenceman to get an 8 year/$9.5M deal since they really started taking off this summer.
$9-$9.5M seems to be the going rate for a #1 defenceman.

You don’t get lower averages for buying prime UFA years.

Surprised at some of the reactions. If you look at all of the big contracts of over $9M signed by Dmen recently, this is one of the more justifiable. He is definitely a top defenseman.

Also includes primarily the prime years of his career. This isn't a Jones or Nurse situation where they are already 26/27.

I would give him top 5 going into this season. He's like Prime Ryan Suter already.

I would say Cale Makar, John Carlson, Roman Josi, Jacob Slavin, Dougie Hamilton, Victor Hedman, Alex Pietrangelo, Shea Theodore, Jakob Chychrun, Adam Fox and John Klingberg are better.
Ellis, Werenski, Jones, Letang, Krug, Ekblad, and Toews are close.
This contract looks good compared to the Brady Tkachuk contract.
But these RFA deals are crazy.
