Obviously, the Flames should start drafting netminders in the Tenth and Eleventh Rounds.

Remember when we could have drafted Martin Brodeur but took a different goalie instead?

Well the sixth round has produced a couple backup goalies, plus Ortio. The third has Vernon and Anderson.

Guess it gives more weight to the arguement about not drafting goalies in the first round.

Kind of points to the issue of there being a development problem. The only goalies that have actually turned out half way decent outside of Vernon have done it in another system like McElhinney, Brossoit, Anderson. I dont think its bad picks considering some of the hype and Junior stats around some of the guys. It really seems that once they get in the Flames system its down hill. If Wolf ends up ruined and Big Save Dave becomes a solid 1b in Nash. I think you have to call a spade a spade.

The "what if" scenario could be said about every goalie in the league. That one just hurt a little more, because the Flames actually moved up by trading picks with the Devils (giving up an extra 2nd in the process).

Would have been better to keep the extra 2nd and draft Kidd/Potvin or Brodeur/Potvin (depending who the Devils took).

And whichever scout that put Mason McDonald ahead of Thatcher Demo should be shot to the sun.

BSD was a solid 1B here.
Why would him doing the same thing in Nashville suggest anything?

The Flames can occasionally draft goalies. They can occasionally develop goalies. But they can almost never draft and develop a goalie.

It's a problem because nearly all cup winning goalies are drafted and developed by the team that they are playing for and are under the age of 29.
On the bright side, it's relatively easy to get competent goaltending through trade or free agency. Almost never have the Flames actually had terrible goaltending.

Never heard of this guy. It turns out he re-entered the draft in 99 and ended up getting picked by Montreal (this time in the 4th round).

Leave it to us to draft a goalie in the second round and he’s not even good enough to play in the AHL. Then we do it again 15 years later with Mason MacDonald. Woof.

Taking McDonald over Demko was just terrible. It was terrible at the time and even more terrible now. I’m still pissed about that

Not just Demko. Nedeljkovic, Vanecek, Merzlikins, and Shesterkin were all available.

Some will say "but McDonald was ranked highly and the Flames took him where he was supposed to go." But just looking at all of their pre-draft stats, taking McDonald ahead of them was always going to be a stupid move. That's part of why most of us hated the pick the moment it was made.

That 2014 draft gives me nightmares, and not just because of McDonald over Demko.

It would be really interesting to see other teams' lists for comparison. How bad do we really do compared to others?

So, Reggie, when you have even more time to spare, perhaps?

Curtis McElhinney has had a quite long career as a backup and now 2 time cup winner. That's not bad for 176th overall pick for a goalie.

You wonder if the 2000 draft wasn't held in Calgary, would the Flames not have selected Krahn from the Hitmen? I recall this was right around the time the Flames brought back Vernon. At a time when the threat of relocation was real seemed like these were PR moves as much as anything.

To be fair, The Hockey News had Trevor Kidd being picked in the top five of the 1990 draft. I think on the cover, they referred to Kidd as a”superstar” goalie.
