I always have to remind myself this isn't the Pelech we used to have before I get mad about poor asset management
Good deal for him, his playoff performance definitely earned him that contract

Yes, we were again unlucky in drafting/ acquiring the lesser brother. Seems to be a trend among flames prospects lol. Granlund, Bure, Pelech, Niedermeyer, Ritchie...

Looks like a fantastic deal when you consider the other contracts handed out to top defensemen this offseason and the Nurse contract rumors.

This league doesn't make any sense to me. Why do you have to pay for Werenski, but not for Pelech? These are all UFA years, too.
I guess it does extend a bit too far into his 30's, so maybe the term is longer than you'd like, but I'd much rather have this contract than a lot of the ones that have been handed out recently or are expected to be handed out before the season starts.

This is a fantastic deal, good work by Lou. Pelech is an outstanding defender.

Of course the term is too long, but when the alternative is letting him walk as a UFA, you plug your nose and sign him up.

Well... yeah. Especially at this price. You don't need to plug your nose. This is a great contract.

I swear its like a practical joke the organization plays on the fans.
Once is a mistake, twice is a coincidence, three times....what are we at now?

Oh it's a good contract in the real NHL. But if the team could pick any term with that AAV, I think 6 years would be better. But that's not the choice.
But I agree it's not likely the best example of my point.

Lou Lamoriello is a future hall of famer in the builder category, so it's not surprising he made a great move.
But also, Werenski puts up twice as many points as Pelech, so it's not exactly apples to apples
Also, the Blue Jackets are looking rough, while the Islanders are arguably the second best team in the Eastern Conference, so the Islanders are a much more attractive destination

Oddly, I thought that Matt Pelech looked a lot better than Adam Pardy in the AHL and was surprised that Pardy got the fulltime callup in 08. Neither ended up being impact players, but I was surprised Matt didn't get a better look.

Having a 26 year old D-man locked up for his entire peak years is great. So what if his play starts to tail off at the end. That’s how it goes.

I'm not arguing. It's not like it takes him until age 36. I agree with the above post about preferring a 5-6 year deal but if this got the cap number down to under 6 it's great.
It just seems like the way to build a successful roster right now is to get effective, mobile defensemen who don't put up a lot of points. Points clearly cost a lot more than they're worth, in terms of their contribution to a winning record.
