Default Antivirus for seniors who can't be trusted.

Does anybody have any suggestions for an antivirus setup for a senior who can't be trusted? Haha.

I don't use antivirus, just free malwarebytes and the built in windows one. Every one in our house is good at not clicking shady stuff, so we haven't had issues.

I'm just cleaning up a bloated computer with expired Norton for a senior that basically uses email, has some pictures and logs into banking and maybe plays some computer card games and stuff. But apparently can't be trusted to not click on shady links.

Cost isn't really a problem,it just needs to be hands off.

Maybe give this a try

https://www.crowdstrike.com/endpoint...rotection-pro/

has a monthly fee but real time protection and its what we use at an enterprise level (Not this version obviously). I have no personal experience with it but in looking this up I might give it a try and replace my weak AV software.

Cost isn't a problem? Don't know about any antivirus programs. I do, however, have a great business opportunity that will pay out big. I'm about to receive a large inheritance, but need funds to secure a bank account first. Please pass this message along to your elderly relatives.

+1 for CrowdStrike. I work in CyberSecurity and a lot of larger companies use them fairly exclusively.

I had a look at that. It feels a tad overkill and I can't tell what the pricing is.

I should clarify on cost isn't an issue. "Paying" isn't an issue. As compared to most of us who just go for free versions and the "don't be stupid" sort of antivirus. They're OK with paid for products.

Enterprise level solutions seem over the top.

If you're prone to clicking links in spam emails from Nigerian princes, and maybe clicking banner ads occasionally would a combo of paid malwarebytes and Chrome adblock be enough?

This would be the home user/non enterprise version, its showing $8.99/month per machine. Its really the safest route.

MB is excellent but instead of adblock, ublock orgin is much better.

As far as AV goes, I'm currently using Bitdefender Total Security but when the renwal is up, I will be switching to Kaspersky.

I've watched a number of videos (some comparing BT directly to Kaspersky) where the presenter is throwing a 1500 samples of ransomware at both, Kaspersky blocked bascially all of them. BT was close but Kaspersky appears to be the champ ATM. It's behavioural analysis is top notch. I'd imagine even the free version is solid but for $50/yr, it's a small investment and can cover up to 5PC's I think.

Would a Chromebook be a good solution here if a platform change is acceptable?

Kaspersky has a very annoying interface. Eset is my preferred AV although the advanced options interface is quite bad but most often you never go in there.

Kaspersky consistently scores at the top for detection rate Eset almost as good.

aside from the various AV choices listed here, most of which will do a good enough job (even Windows Defender is not that bad), make sure they're not logging in as an admin. create a non-admin user account for them and save the keys for elevated permissions for yourself. that should stop most bad executables from making system level changes or installations.

Always a great method I keep forgetting to mention. I really need to do the same myself.

Chromebooks are pretty safe for this too if they don't want a tablet.
