The NHL is a funny place. You can go from being a consistent healthy scratch in the playoffs to making 9M dollars in the span of just a couple months.

Wow. Would have liked Flames to sign him on a one year deal (if Eichel deal didn’t happen), but not at 4.5.

He's been a 46pt+ pace player for 6/7 last seasons. AAV and term seem fair.
One of the last guys who might still have some of that 'magic' from developing in the DET system when it was still good.

Even so, he was scratched in the playoffs twice.
Vegas paid a 1st 2nd and 3rd, only to scratch him.
Montreal isn't teeming with depth, and was scratched there, too.
That has to be concerning.

I think at this point Tatar can be seen as a player that help get you to the playoffs. He may not be a playoff performer but there is value in a guy that can produce in the regular season and fits well on a powerplay.

Reminds me of Huselius. Can depend on him to consistently produce points for you, but lacks the same level on the defensive side of his game.

Is Joe Fresh affiliated with Dom Luszczyszyn? They always seem to mirror each other.
Quote:
Dom Luszczyszyn, NHL analytics writer: In Montreal, Tatar was rarely given the minutes requisite of his ability. In a bigger role with the Devils, it wouldn’t be a shock to see him flirt with 60 points.
In each of the last three seasons, he’s been incredibly productive at five-on-five, averaging 2.47 points-per-60 in that time frame. That’s tied with Elias Pettersson for 18th in the league. On top of that, he drives play extremely well and is a great asset off the rush.
Tatar looks like he would be a great fit with either Hughes or Nico Hischier and is projected to make New Jersey two wins better. That brings them into the playoff conversation.

Such a weird player.
He looks borderline elite during the season as those advanced stats show, but has been healthy scratched in the playoffs by both Vegas and Montreal in Cup Finals runs.

A podcast I listened to last week described him as a guy that gets you there but doesn't get you through.

On 31 Thoughts, they said he is a guy to get you to the playoff, but has never done well in the playoff.
You need to have him and Bennett at the same time only trade them out at the trade deadline.

Prime example of a player who divides the Analytics Wonks and the Hockey Men. Analytics guys don’t understand why he would ever be scratched, and the hockey guys see liabilities that aren’t captured by analytics.
Similar to the divided opinions over Hamilton. Now they’re both core players on the same team. Will be interesting to see how it plays out.

Would have been a good fit alongside Monahan then....except I think only one of the two even gets you there.

If you give two data analysts the same research question, they should arrive at similar conclusions.

We have a couple of examples/ case studies coming up:
Will analytical losers Ristolainen , Zadorov and Schmidt sink the Flyers and Flames and Jets?
Will Buffalo Chicago and Vancouver be better without them?

If the kids step up, this could be a good signing for the Devils.
Low risk signing that might payoff huge. Tatar could get them to the playoffs over the duration of the contract.
